Hello, I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam.

Hello,I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam. After checking in my luggage, I proceeded to the security checkpoint. While standing in line, I was called to a control room where baggage is scanned. There were no illegal or prohibited items in my luggage. However, the employee asked me for money in order for my luggage to pass through. I found this request unusual and initially declined. She then insisted and suggested that I give 500,000 VND as a tip.In an effort to resolve the situation and continue with my departure, I opened my wallet intending to give a smaller amount (100,000 VND). While I was searching for smaller bills, the employee reached into my wallet and took 500,000 VND without my consent.I would like to know if this is standard practice, as it appeared inappropriate and concerning.

Probably forgot to take batteries out or had a charger or something volatile. You are asked to wait at the screening after you check your bags in with the airline. If there is a problem your name will be on a screen before you go through immigration. I have never had it happen in 9 visits. I have heard of VN being stopped coming in and had arguments but never heard of anyone having a problem going out.

I paid a cash tip to get into Tan Son Nhat, many years ago. A dollar bill under my passport. Nowadays – & I was just there a few months ago – I didn’t see anything like that. Things have changed.

That’s really strange coz I was called up once into the baggage checking area coz I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to bring frozen meat out of Vietnam without a permit though I had done so countless times. Anyway, I offered to pay for an “expidited” permit, hinting I was open to options. I even took out by my wallet but no one in the room dared to ask for any money. They let me off with a warning.

Happened to me. They did the same thing. I didn’t know. I gave it to them. I will ask for the police next time.

I had a similar problem at Athens airport many years ago, he was searching my luggage thoroughly and repeatedly asking if I was carrying US$…..
