Hello,I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam. After checking in my luggage, I proceeded to the security checkpoint. While standing in line, I was called to a control room where baggage is scanned. There were no illegal or prohibited items in my luggage. However, the employee asked me for money in order for my luggage to pass through. I found this request unusual and initially declined. She then insisted and suggested that I give 500,000 VND as a tip.In an effort to resolve the situation and continue with my departure, I opened my wallet intending to give a smaller amount (100,000 VND). While I was searching for smaller bills, the employee reached into my wallet and took 500,000 VND without my consent.I would like to know if this is standard practice, as it appeared inappropriate and concerning.

Hello everyone, sorry to go into culture, I am not familiar with traveling in Vietnam so I would not know. The only places that I had been in Vietnam are Danang City (went there twice, had a bad homestay seakite solo experience in 2015), Hoi An, Halong Bay (famous for the limestone hill islands, more spectacular culture wise than the limestone hills in Singapore such as little Guilin, Singapore Quarry, Bukit Batok Nature Park and Bukit Gombak Nature Park.)
I’d let it go if you plan to return.
This should never happen in any airport. She needs to be reported, there is no way in hell I would be handing over money 🤬
You need to report to the higher level one.
You’re travelling during New Year welcome to Vietnam
No its not, just make a fuss and call other workers,
Been to vietnam more times than I can count (7 times in 2025 alone) and never had a problem with immigration. Had some incidents with the traffic police though.
Always say you will go to the tourist police if this will go on
Had it happen with a passport, wouldn’t give it back till paid
I travel to Vietnam once every 2 years and I have to say …. Never have I ever, get my luggage stop at custom or get item stolen from luggage or demand money so I can go through. I didnt say there are none because bad people are everywhere. But Vietnam has become more and more modern and these pity acts have long stop or not in common. Unless you did bring something illegal and instead of making you throw these items away, they ask for “tip” so you can pass through. 90% of them has little to none English, so it is hard for them to explain why they have to throw it so when they cant get the “tip”, they let you go. There are litterally thousand of tourists coming to Vietnam everyday, especially when it is closer to Tet holiday like now so it cant be random that they just pick one and “ask” for money.
