Hello, I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam.

Hello,I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam. After checking in my luggage, I proceeded to the security checkpoint. While standing in line, I was called to a control room where baggage is scanned. There were no illegal or prohibited items in my luggage. However, the employee asked me for money in order for my luggage to pass through. I found this request unusual and initially declined. She then insisted and suggested that I give 500,000 VND as a tip.In an effort to resolve the situation and continue with my departure, I opened my wallet intending to give a smaller amount (100,000 VND). While I was searching for smaller bills, the employee reached into my wallet and took 500,000 VND without my consent.I would like to know if this is standard practice, as it appeared inappropriate and concerning.

I once had my passport washed by our maid and had to get a new one from Australian Embassy (where I worked). A new visa was requested, and an official at Vn Immigration asked me to “read the nespaper”. This means you put your “tea money” in the folded paper when you give it back to the official. I refused and the official told me I had 3 days to leave Vn. I told this moron that I worked for Aus Embassy and his actions might see Australia aid held up, and would he like being named when the questions started to fly. Guess who got a new visa?

Lived in Vn for 20+ years- I thought this type of behaviour was over. It’s bully tactics, and in the past when it happened to me (a few times) I threatened physical retribution and the matter went no further.

100% made up. This is bs. Tell you what, they will not do some sh!t like that – asking/taking some small amount of money from people. Tell you what, because they have very good income working there, also they might paid alot to have that job. So they will not do some stupid sh!t like that otherwise they will lose their job. Also they know exactly everything they do they have cameras around to record everything bad things if they do. Also they know if any bad things they do, it might have reported from people. So no matter what you are foreigner or you are Vietnamese living overseas coming home – I dont believe that happened to you. They have serious law and rules for them to follow. VN today is not a poor or law less like many many years ago anymore. 10-15 years ago it might happened. But NOT today. So just Stop it. BS.

This behaviour is very inappropriate but very common in communist Vietnam where persons with some authority power will try to intimidate and taking bride- traffic police , airport security officials
