Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Don’t worry. They will not consider. Be happy and enjoy your visit when you come. 💖
We got told it would be hot when we were in Vietnam, so packed light. When we got to Hanoi it was bloody freezing, so set off to get some warm clothes. Everytime we walked into a shop they said to my husband and I “you need King Kong sizes” 😂 I think at first we were offended but then we walked into a busier street we heard Vietnamese out the front of the shops yelling “King Kong sizes”. Sure enough when we entered the shops, they were full of westerners. Its not hard to be bigger than the vietnamese, they are mostly very small. We are both very tall so got lots of looks. I thought everyone was looking at me because I was a bit bigger, but when we sat down and spoke to a Vietnamese woman in a nail salon she assured me they are looking at my blue eyes and nose. At the time a lot of Vietnamese women were obsessed with small noses and blue eyes!!!
It’s common among friends. If you just travel and don’t have any friends, no worries
Yes. I’ve had a few comments but nothing awful.
If you are fat they will tell you that you are fat – no filter
Asians extremely honest and brutal with their remarks. Not cruel, just saying how they see it. It means you are wealthy in some Asian cultures as you can afford to eat good, plentiful food. Don’t worry, just enjoy the ride.
I’m bigger and have been called fat in Vietnam on many occasions. It is not malicious, but comes across more like good natured teasing. I go along with it., and just pick on them for how short they are. It is all good natured ribbing and the Vietnamese are the kindest and most hospitable people when you get to know them.
We went for 5 weeks in 2024. My hubby has a big tummy, as he has a hernia and also loves his food & the odd beverage.
I am overweight and nobody makes fun of me don’t worry.
When you say overweight how overweight we talking? My wife and I are curvy girls and never had any issues. The only issue is coping in the heat 😂 chub rub is real! We try to maintain what weight we have on our bodies and try to reduce it before we go so our bodies dont struggle as much as it would with our “winter weight” 😂
