I am size s to m in US. In Vietnam, I wear size xl. People called me fat. One time, one of the clothing store near Ben Thanh market even refused to let me try on clothes cause he afraid that I will rip it, so I spent my money elsewhere. However, I think they are more gentle with non-Vietnamese lol

Yes!!! They are brutal.
Just returned this weekend and my husband has a big belly and everyone was calling him Buddha 🤪 In a kind of friendly/ funny way . and when we went shopping in the markets they all called out hey we got your size and spread their hands wiiiiiide. He’s got thick skin and laughed it off but honestly it was becoming annoying after a while. I don’t think they were being mean but as someone mentioned they say what they think and they aren’t too used to large people Just take it on the chin and keep an open mind. It’s a different culture
If comments are made, it’s more so an observation and not typically meant to be snarky or mean. More like, “we don’t have your size or “American” size.”
Yes, but they are nice about it.
It’s part of their schtick when selling you clothes. Their sizes do not line up with our sizes.
If they do say anything, their intention is not to be mean. Just stating their observation. Pretty common in Asian culture. When I saw my aunt for fist time in few years, first thing she said to me was “you did get fat”! That’s in South Korea. I laughed and said, yup, I sure did!
Make sure your wife dont get jealous when Vietnamese aunty rub your belly and say lucky lucky lucky
I am a large person myself and have been to Vietnam twice. Vietnamese are very direct blunt people. If they say hey look at that big person they’re making a statement not criticizing. Of course that doesn’t mean they might not be criticizing .. people are people. But as a foreigner and a large person they were fascinated by me. A few people said something a couple wanted pictures I got groped a couple times
