The only comments that were negative about my appearance were how dirty my white shoes were…no comments on weight. I mean after the 5th time though I was pretty embarrassed to wear my shoes so I turfed them to avoid further shame
They will say…”very handsome man”
I find that south east Asians don’t have filters. For example, big man is looking at shirts, “it’s ok we have elephant size” is not to be rude just unfiltered exaggerated truths. They love to point out how big my nose is. 🤣
just try tonturn a blind eye and enjoynyour holiday. most of the time comment about physical looks in asia have no malice.

They will call someone size 4 US fat so even you not overweight they will still call you fat so ignore it. But no one will call you fat as a tourist. They just say that to family. the word fat is not as serious I say it all the time with my Vietnamese but with American i would never say that word
On a similar note to belly rubbing, I had a lady obsessed with my nose, she kept pointing to it and pressing it, talking to her friends about it and giggling, any clues why this would be?? We did laugh along with them 🤣
friendlies would rub my belly and say “happy Buddha” 😂 after a few years on this I went on a keto diet and am much better for it. Compared to other asian countries, Vietnam is wonderfully chaos and doesn’t pay to be thick skinned. You might be better suited to awesome OCD Japan at the other end of the scale. Your wife won’t get any of these comments/actions tho.
I’m 6ft 2 and 16 stone, I was told by a stall holder that they had Elephant size for me 🤣
“Family” and “friends of family” whom ive never even met were quick to say things like… “oh dont get bigger ok”… but I have very thick skin and dgaf. Also I’m 5’1 and 135lbs at the time.
