Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Not common and people don’t mean it when they joke. But they’re not normally criticizing your weight
It happens. Fairly often but see it as them speaking the truth rather than being nasty. It’s sometimes annoying, after all while very annoying but it happens mainly from people that know you or if you’re looking for clothes!
My husband is tall and big so he really looks different to the locals. at least 6 different occasions women not one on their own but small groups would come up and smile and say “happy Buddha” we just smiled a I would say no “happy man”
In VN having some weight is a good thing
Loose weight! Solves all the problems!
Ladies at the markets had clothes that were ‘one size fits all’ and the ladies pat me on the stomach and said ‘not you, too big’.
Vietnamese people are friendly but say what they think without filter. One young lady told me that her grandfather was 10 years older than me but looked much younger. So expect some negative comment but don’t be offended because they’re not trying to be rude.
Literally just got back from Vietnam and they manufacture a lot of clothing for western sizes . One street food vendor in Hanoi did remark to my friend who is 5’11”, and athletic by touching her calves saying “strong!” She was stating a fact, so….💪🏼
Vietnam has been my fav travel destination- mainly because of the people! They were genuinely happy, funny, warm people. I can’t comment as to whether you will get commented on re your weight 🤷♀️. It’s a possibility anywhere in the world isn’t it? There’s nasty people everywhere. Don’t let it ruin your holiday.
I’m skinny and I don’t care when someone or any one called me skinny !.
