Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Yes, I’m half vietnamese- once my sister was walking pass a store in hoi an – once of the workers was trying to get her to buy stuff and when she politely said no thank you, he went onto body shame her. When he realised we could understand he tried to apologise but it was clearly insincere
Yes if ur vietnamese lol. Ask me how i know.
Blunt is more like it but “blunter” when they know you and/or family. It’s quite a paradox really cuz on one breath they’ll say “oh look like you’ve been jolly (saying you’re fat—😝)” …. Then turn around and go “oh you need to eat this, I made it and it’s yummy”
Yes, it is common for close friends
It’s quite common, lol. They’re not doing it on purpose. They’re known for being straightforward and have no filters when they say things. For example: I went to a dress shop. There was a dress I was looking at on the hanger. The sales lady came to me and told me the dress is for a slim body only 😂. I was not overweight I’m 110lbs.
Vietnamese are polite people and anyway doesn’t matter what people say it all depends on how comfortable you are with it. For healthy purpose its advisable you start watching your diet and do alot of exercise. You will enjoy your trip because of the energy. Start with sugar and carbohydrates detox and atleast daily walks of 12,000 steps .
If you are thinned skin you better change or someone will likely upset your feelings. If there laughing it’s probably because your fat. I had a friend who was not fat but big for a lady. Muscles and tall. She was told frequently about her size.
I don’t think it is meant to be malicious but it can hurt, particularly when it feels relentless. My friend was patted on the stomach and called Buddha by many people.
Money speaks, they don’t care enough to bully over those things. As long as you spend and patronize their establishments, your worries would be more on them trying to hustle you
Some people will comment and joke about it. Just walk away and don’t engage them
