Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great.

Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great. They charged $350,000VND!! No problem. Then before we paid they wanted us to rate the massage with a strongly suggested $300,000VND tip for each of us. Is this normal? We don’t mind tipping but that seems excessive. Can anyone explain? TIA

Definitely not normal. I’ve had nearly a dozen massages over the past month. I always tip but it’s never been “highly suggested”

They never ask for tips before until more Americans started going there. They never asked me for a tip. Was there last year and the year before

Yes because they only make 10 percents of that price. The owner take 90 percents. So they depend on tips

I’ve found tipping is expected at the cheap massage places like the $350k one you had. The therapist get paid little. At the higher end places they charge more and pay better.

That can be normal depending on the place. I went to a massage that said 250k massage and 250k tip so in total it was 500k massage. They said it upfront so I was OK with that. Agreed a high tip is normally expected at a cheaper massage place.

If you go to a reputable spa for a massage, they don’t allow tipping because they already charge enough to pay their workers fair wages. I recommend Hum Spa in HCMC.

I had the same experience in HCM. Not the same in other places. I was a bit annoyed as tip should be optional & I felt misled & then in a corner. But the massage was fantastic so I paid the extra 300k
