Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great. They charged $350,000VND!! No problem. Then before we paid they wanted us to rate the massage with a strongly suggested $300,000VND tip for each of us. Is this normal? We don’t mind tipping but that seems excessive. Can anyone explain? TIA

What those ladies are asking you is a not right. Tipping is optional. If they want that kind of tip, then put it on the sign before they start the massage. Otherwise it’s defrauding you for the other half of pay they expected. Those people know that is a huge amount to ask the locals. They do this to tourists. If you want to make this behavior normal, then pay what they ask.
100K vnd is what I tipped for a legitimate massage. They need to make a living too.
Come to thailand massages are half the cost and they happy with a 2$ tip per hr

Depending on the place, in short they do ask even my vietnamese friends and or wife to pay extra (sometimes). this may or may not be true for all places, but many of the owners get most of the money, then you pay the girls separately on the side, and before people yell out sicko jokes (not bui vien) these are reputable places with friends and family male and female . All Vietnamese, I’m the only Tay. So I have heard that before over the years here. Been here since 2011.
Come on… if the masseuse realize on tips don’t be a cheapskate. 500,000 vnd is about 26.00 cdn. It’s nothing to us but would be so appreciated by them.
If I was charged a tenner for a good massage I’d likely tip that but that should be a choice rather than an expectation
Excessive! Some spas like Bong spa even have a “no tip” policy. One time I gave the $$ to my massage lady and she reminded me: oh you forgot our no tip policy!
