Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great. They charged $350,000VND!! No problem. Then before we paid they wanted us to rate the massage with a strongly suggested $300,000VND tip for each of us. Is this normal? We don’t mind tipping but that seems excessive. Can anyone explain? TIA

I really hate this tipping culture. Charge me a fair price, and I will be happy to pay, but don’t expect tips. Not all visitors are from America, and I work hard to save money for my holiday, and we are from a country where the exchange rate is very bad for the dollar.
Tipping is always optional & generally I dislike a tipping culture because it emboldens businesses to pay low wages to but I once got chatting to a massage therapist in Vietnam as I have the same job in the UK. She explained that they get 50p-£1 from each massage & the rest goes to the business owner so they rely on tips for their income. so please, if you have had a good massage please tip generously. A massage on the UK would cost you 6 times more.
Well for $650,000 VND with tip that’s $25 USD so it seems like a good price still for an hour massage
That is excessive! 50k to 100k is standard IF you choose to tip for exceptional service
My thought on tipping anywhere and for anything is why tip almost the same as the cost for a service regardless of if it’s a good deal or not based on where you come from? Tipping is suppose to be a kind gesture for good service, not to pay the employee and definitely not to tip almost more than the business itself. That makes no sense to me. If tipping is required for the employee to be paid, add it in the cost of the service and I’ll decide if i think the cost is worth the service, and then I’ll possibly tip if the service is good. Don’t chance the employees pay hoping the customer tips.
As a person who has worked for tips over 40 years; if someone asks for a tip I will give them nothing.
My last day today, 17 nites. Have had massages almost every day! Three i had on shops on street the rest from my hotels i have been staying and never had that happen to me, i have left reviews each time which they seemed to appreciate more and tips each time but not as you mentioned above
