Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great. They charged $350,000VND!! No problem. Then before we paid they wanted us to rate the massage with a strongly suggested $300,000VND tip for each of us. Is this normal? We don’t mind tipping but that seems excessive. Can anyone explain? TIA

It’s basically paying the house then you pay the worker. Its just not explained well. I have a Vietnamese wife and we live in Vũng Tàu, 3 months out of the year and thats how it is for us locally when we get massages. We pay twice, its not really a tip. But still a lot cheaper than the USA prices.

People say Vietnam isn’t a tipping culture, I was there for 10 days late last year and had a massage every day. After every massage I was handed a piece of paper with how much I wanted to tip granted there was a box for no tip but I’m an advocate for tipping in these countries. Just an observation in apparently a ‘none tipping’ culture.
You should try “Sen Tài Thu” located inside the Tan Son Nhat Hotel near the airport. It’s a wonderful spa with skilled therapeutic masseuses. It is the BEST at any of their branches in Hanoi, Đà Nẵng, or HCMC. Tip is always optional but if I am pleased and appreciative of the masseuse, I can tip 200K as I have to pay a lot more at home in the U.S. 100K is a good amount, too.

Tip is just a bonus if you satisfied with your service…, you can tip them more.., if you are not satisfied then just tip them a normal amount… can’t force a customer to tip them as the percentage they want…lol. Travel to a different country try to learn their currency for your best experience….
They also put you on the spot in front of the masseurs and ask if you enjoyed the massage? How can you say it was crsp when they are standing right there? Then they hit you for the tip based on you saying it was good.
