Hey my wife and I just had a massage in HCMC and they were great. They charged $350,000VND!! No problem. Then before we paid they wanted us to rate the massage with a strongly suggested $300,000VND tip for each of us. Is this normal? We don’t mind tipping but that seems excessive. Can anyone explain? TIA

10%, 15 if really good, 20 if Great. This was from a Vietnamese poster I read 6 weeks ago, so have used that as a guide. Never been asked for a tip in all the massages in all the communities I’ve been to. IF they did ask for 100%, I’d smile, be polite and say no.

There are thousands of massage places in Hcmc, but only a few are good. You don’t have to do what they suggest if you are not planning to go back there again. Also i found it’s strange to suggest how much you should tip. And the tip money doesn’t all go to masseurs, they only get 20-40% (from some masseurs told me).

Vietnamese masseurs rely mainly on tips because most of the proceeds go to the owner. I usually tip an amount equal to the service price or more, depending on the quality of the skills.

Most massage places in VN, the business takes up to 100% of the fees, masseuse can get down to 0. They depends solely on earning tips. Start with tipping 50% of the price and up for tipping depending on service quality is a fair way of thinking and not over thinking on your vacation.
