Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? My family is very direct and honest with me about my weight, at the same time the delivery is usually humorous and loving, but they would never be that way with strangers. In my opinion, this reflects Vietnamese culture more broadly in this respect.
I explained to my partner that back in the old days, being on the bigger size was a sign of wealth (think landlords/landladies in historical movies of the 18th-19th century).
We got told “No King Kong Size” 😂😂 but not said with Malice, we laughed… I’m not easily offended though
People are very respectful here in Vietnam. I have NEVER heard anyone comment on someone else’s size. Maybe in Vietnamese amongst themselves. Don’t listen to the clowns in the comment section.
Am of Vietnamese descent and waited a very long 59 years before having the opportunity to meet my grandma’s family, and it’s a massive big family. I was welcome in a way I’ll never forget. I am very overweight and within the hours they all were trying to make me loose weight and get out my wheelchair, it was all very obviously done with love and concern. Their way to say “you are family”. I never perceived it as rude or disrespectful at all. I can’t wait to go back …
Just for your information, the picture is one of our lucky and rich and happy Buhda. We prey to him for all of the above. So be brave and go to Vietnam, you could be call Buhda resembling… his name is “Di Lac”.
I’m about 25 lb overweight thank you menopause. Anyway, I was in Ho Chi Minh City in a shop looking for something for my friend’s daughter and there were four girls in there and one of them commented on my size to the other girl and said big. I kind of snapped back but not rudely and said I wasn’t shopping for myself and yes I’m aware of my size and she just gave me an embarrassed smile. And no they do not cater to bigger people even ones with bigger feet. I wear a size 9 in women’s and I could barely find anything in my shoe size. And they did tell me that I had big feet and I laughed at that. But I love Vietnam that’s why I’m going back again in April. But this time I’m going to be 25 lbs lighter and I’m already down 10 lbs. 😂
Please, please do not take any conveyance where a local pulls u around. Please. Please do not complain about all the walking, and and lack of elevators. Your poor health is your responsibility. Do research first. Andvbtw…fb is not research.
Nobody is going to say anything .. I just got back and saw tons of blubbery Russians on the beach .. nobody cares.
