Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? In Viet nam we have a sologan you can use to reply them either in english “Slim is pretty, chubby is adorable, tall is elegant, short is classy” or vietnamese version ” ốm đẹp – mập dễ thương – cao sang – lùn quý phái” . if you reply in vietnamese they will find you impressive and witty

I don’t know specifically about Vietnam, but I do know that overweight Japanese are shunned in their own culture.

They aren’t being rude-they are just candid and honest and just speak. My grandson has weight on him and some cute aunties would come rub his belly and say something which I assumed was “chubby” or “well fed”. But it appeared innocent enough. If they were saying worse- it wouldn’t affect us anyway because they aren’t badgering or mean about it.

No. Never. I’ve been travelling to VN for 25 years. They’re actually helpful when you need a bigger stool. It’s actually Chinese tourists that take an interest in big whities.

People here are polite. We don’t share the same kind of cultural norms or humor where it’s common to demean people for laughs. Now, true story for me. I forgot my belt when packing to go to Vietnam. I could not find a replacement because they don’t make belts for my size. I was offered cargo string to tie myself up. And it was not for comedy. It was legit concern because they knew that my pants were too loose and slipping.

Viet people will look and laugh. But we are only critical of people we care about…. Not strangers
