Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Vietnam has the thinnest people in the world. It’s a light hearted jest that you’d get comment about weight from time to time.

They will comment, same as if you have blonde hair. Vietnamese are very body conscious and like to keep themselves fit and healthy. You will see them in the parks or on the beach exercising early morning and evening before the sun gets to hot. Especially the older Vietnamese the younger ones like gyms. I lived there from 2005 to 2010 I am there now for Tet spend a lot of time there my wife is Vietnamese.and I have Vietnamese family still living there. It will not be in a malicious way but you will get comments.

After this trip, Vietnamese aunties will train you to have thick skin. Don’t worry, it builds character…Just kidding, they only roast their own people. You’re safe 😅

I noticed they are happy to rub your belly and let you know you are chubby. But never seemed rude to me.

Honestly just toughen up, who cares as long as you are not riding a donkey, horse or human drawn carriage.
