Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? I would be more worried about the tiny plastic restaurant chairs and just how nimble on your feet you have to be walking the city streets in some areas. Download the grab app for transport. As for acceptance of larger bodies I agree with most comments – people may be direct but not malicious – if you are open and direct back that’s usually best. Good luck!

Yes. It is quite common 🥹 often asian’s show love through those comments not knowing how much of a negative impacts they have on others.

When I lived in Vietnam I was tall and thin and had to wear belts all the time to keep my pants from falling down but had a little fluff around my hips and one day my landlady came up behind me, pinched the tiny bit of fat on my midsection and said “I paid to put in a treadmill in the community gym, why don’t you use it?” So… yes, but I would say they probably won’t say anything unless they know you, not if it’s a short interaction, and seems to be out of concern. If you already have a thick skin, I wouldn’t stress it.

Nah man they will very politely ask you how many meals you eat a day…. I know. i speak Vietnamese so i they woud tell me how much fatter i got than last year…. I was over 300lbs last time i was there. Anyway, In the states we’re taught to look at a fat person and tell them they are healthy and look fine. Not everywhere is like that.
