Hello, I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam.

Hello,I had incident that occurred at Tan Son Nhat Airport while I was departing Vietnam. After checking in my luggage, I proceeded to the security checkpoint. While standing in line, I was called to a control room where baggage is scanned. There were no illegal or prohibited items in my luggage. However, the employee asked me for money in order for my luggage to pass through. I found this request unusual and initially declined. She then insisted and suggested that I give 500,000 VND as a tip.In an effort to resolve the situation and continue with my departure, I opened my wallet intending to give a smaller amount (100,000 VND). While I was searching for smaller bills, the employee reached into my wallet and took 500,000 VND without my consent.I would like to know if this is standard practice, as it appeared inappropriate and concerning.

This is a common practice. Upon arrival, they usually request payment to clear customs. They particularly target Vietnamese individuals, asking for “cafe money.” This has been a longstanding issue!

Never happened to me and I have frequently traveled to VN last 8 years. I know that the tendencies is that this is more “common” when getting closer to Tet ( not only at the airport).

This is corruption, I deliver bribery and corruption at work which covers customs officials asking for money to get things through. Ask for their supervisor / airport police straightaway and if they insist too, you need to an official receipt dated and stamped.
