Get a VERIFIED guide – use a US organization you can turn to if in trouble. Try a chartered tour (ex Road Scholar if education is main purpose). It’s a busy environment in the primary cities.
You will love Vietnam
You might want to be ready to move there for your retirement.

Don’t hold back ! The Vietnamese are very family orientated and are very gracious an respectful to older people as reflected in their culture.

Go, it is a wonderful experience. I was there 2 years ago as an independant ( no travel agent) solo female 77 year old. Had a great time going north to south in one month
Wonderful friendly country. I went with a senior tour group.
Beds are hard
I’m 73, spent 15 days in Vietnam a year ago. Guided tour, south to the north and finished in Anchor Wat. So much to see and great food. It is a very long flight.
