Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? Just want to know what to expect and how to react.Thanks.Honest question: my wife and I are overweight and not thick-skinned. Are comments or jokes about body weight common in Vietnam? You will receive some jokes, but they will beg for your respect and money. There’s a huge double standard there
You’ll probably get more comments from the poor people who end up sitting next to you on a long haul flight…..
You might get a couple or people wanting to take photos with you but mostly they won’t say anything to you. Had one old mole on the plane calling me fat in Vietnamese. I knew the word. But that was one out of millions over 3 weeks. You’ll be fine. Harden up.
They will be speaking Vietnamese so you may never know
Vietnamese are very blunt and direct, they will mention weight.. and depending on the context they might say no because you are overweight, because the extra weight will not work for that situation
Body shaming is a real thing in Vietnam, because we were so poor & skinny, but then people got wealthy & our diet got so westernised so more overweight people now, like the rest of Asia. You’ll be fine.
Yes they are, a man went and grabbed my husband’s lack of pecs 😂 They are friendly though
Yes they tell me I’m fat every single day get over it 😂🤣
I have heard, right from my Vietnamese daughter-in-law, that the Vietnamese will be rude and make comments about overweight people which breaks my heart because one of my sons who is going our our 2 week trip is obese. Personally, I have found they don’t have the same social norms as westerners because their from a whole different continent. We don’t talk over one another, they do and it gets quite loud. Prepare now for rude comments.
You wont understand a word they say unless they make piggy sounds. That is a universal sound. I hope this helps.
