Hi everyone, I will be travelling to Vietnam for the first time later this year.

Hi everyone, I will be travelling to Vietnam for the first time later this year.I grew up hearing stories about corrupt airport officials asking for bribe money when you enter/leave the country.I was told that they will make up random excuses to make you wait – sometimes the entire day. I heard it mostly has to do with fake “Visa issues”… “longer baggage checks”… “confiscated packages at Customs”… (especially expensive items). Is all of that still happening in 2026?

I didn’t experience any of that. I’m here now. Just make sure you have your evisa – printed and a copy in your phone

Well, it’s hard to say if those problems still exist with the brand new airport for international flights, which will open mid this year. Those you heard might only happen to the existing old SGN airport.

No, entered 7 times in vietnam and never asked for money. They just check your passport, take a quick view of your visa, stamp your passport and return it to you without a word.

I only did that the first few times, out of fear, but that was.. 30 years ago! LOL. Immigration might ask a few questions and they don’t look friendly but there is NO need to put any money in your passport. Customs is a little different if you have many pieces of luggage and bring a lot of similar items. They will send them through X-ray and if in doubt, will ask you to open up for inspection. Only fear this if you are a reseller who wants to avoid paying import taxes. At least then, your bribe will be much less than the taxes you might have to pay. Other than that, forget about your parents’ old wives’ tales and enjoy your trip. From someone who travels to Vietnam 2x times!;-)

No. We got through with no issue. Only thing is to keep your boarding pass. They asked for it along with your passport.
