Hi everyone, I will be travelling to Vietnam for the first time later this year.I grew up hearing stories about corrupt airport officials asking for bribe money when you enter/leave the country.I was told that they will make up random excuses to make you wait – sometimes the entire day. I heard it mostly has to do with fake “Visa issues”… “longer baggage checks”… “confiscated packages at Customs”… (especially expensive items). Is all of that still happening in 2026?

We arrived a couple days ago, we were out of the airport within 20 min (Da Nang). No issues at all.
No but vietjet scam you! Hopefully you are not flying with them
No, that’s the old story of 30+ years ago. Now It is like any other International airports of the World. The government had cracked down on corruption since 2000 with cameras and heavy penalties. I”ve been traveling to VN every year for the last 10 years and it is fine. Just long lines under the record of visiting expatriates and tourists.
Hint: whatever you do don’t speak vietnamese with them 😁
Nope. Didn’t happen with us. Only helpful. CDNS arriving from Japan, in Hanoi in the middle of the afternoon. About 15 mins including: immigration guy helping with our QR code cuz I didnt get separate one for my husband, bathroom pit stop, info lady helping us figure out where bus 86 was to get downtown. FYI we dont check luggage. It was easy, welcoming, and hassle free.
Some of you people should just stay home or go on a cruise . . .
Just the opposite. I left a couple batteries for my phones in my luggage. They took us out of line, to luggage, quite stern but also easily could have been heavy handed. Total professionals. For uniformed army types, quite intimidating. No issues. Always a random one off, but Id have paid for sure…..
The amount of people telling an ethnic viet to not come to vietnam because he had an honest question is pathetic. Get over yourselves.
No, nothing like that in recent years. Only going to have issues if your visa isn’t 100% correct. That’s going to cost you buku bucks whether it’s through an agent or the immigration department itself. Only use the official government evisa site and check absolutely every detail very carefully and you won’t have any problems. Over 21 million visitors last year, haven’t heard of anyone being asked for bribes. Approximately 28 countries also enjoy visa exemption for up to 45 days.
Don’t worry about it. You won’t have a problem. Don’t pay any bribes or put money in your passport. Forget the fast track. Just wait in line like everyone else. It doesn’t take long.
