Watch out for the bait and switch taxi drivers. They will take 500,000 and then switch it to 50,000 Dong (100,000 to 10,000)and say you still owe them money. It’s happened to me twice in Saigon. This was the one who got away with it. The second one didn’t work. Your best bet is to get a Grab from the app off your phone.

Use Grab!
But even with grab and other apps if ur paying in cash they can confuse you with changing the notes, best to have auto pay link to your card and have notifications so you know straight away what you paid.
I had a grab driver say I didn’t hand him enough money (missing 100k) when i tripled counted the money before handing it to him. I reported him on the app and they actually dealt with it. But scammy people everywhere so also when handing over money.. count it and dont just hand over a lump sum lol they are quick but response from grab was good.
Use grab only
Even Grab can potentially be iffy though I have only had one bad experience. Unknown to me at the time, the Grab driver from the airport cancelled the ride after we got in and demanded cash when we got to our destination.
I will never use a taxi in vietnam. If it’s not coming from my grab app I will not hop in it.
