Suitcase or backpack? Hi I’m planning to travel south east Asia – Vietnam, Malaysia (maybe Thailand) and China, for about 3-4 months.

Suitcase or backpack?Hi I’m planning to travel south east Asia – Vietnam, Malaysia (maybe Thailand) and China, for about 3-4 months. Everyone I see takes a backpack, but the idea of carrying that around doesn’t please me. Would I be okay with a suitcase instead? Did anyone have a bad experience with a suitcase?

There are some fabulous backpacks with wheels available that also have a day pack that zips.off and on. I would recommend those, which is what I used (sorry can’t remember the brand, but can find it if you need)…

Been to over 70 countries, 50 with 1 kid, 45 with 2 kids…can’t remember the last country we used a suitcase. Early on, wife carries a 70L, I carry a 90L. Ever since we figured out laundry and along with the high cost of checked in bag, it’s just the 90L for a family of 4 now. Each has a carry-on backpack and that’s it. Last trip was Taiwan, Bali, Jakarta, and Borneo for nearly 3 weeks. Would not have done it any other way in terms of packing.

I started off with a suitcase. Major regret the first day. 6 months in I came home for 4 weeks and went back out with my family’s vintage travelling back pack. 14kg on my back felt like carrying a Chanel handbag compared to a suitcase

Normally I take trolleys with wheels. For transfer between airport and hotel or between hotels. Then for day trips from hotel, I take a backpack (Underarmour normal size not sure if capacity in litres) with water bottle, some snacks, passport, emergency medicines. 1 changing cloth, 1 small towel and basic skin care. For day trips it’s more than enough. If I am leaving for say 2 days I would carry back pack and a small duffle bag. No need to carry the trolleys everywhere but it’s definitely helps to keep all our luggage in trolley

I have a roller bag that converts to a backpack 50l plus a 20l day sack that can be attached to it. This is working fine for 3 months.

I am using suitcase and flying several times. So much easier. Backpack for daily use.

I’ve had zero issues with my suitcase. Couldn’t imagine doing a backpack. Also, with a suitcase, you’ll have the option to under pack and shop.

A wheel suitcase will be just fine, grabs everywhere you wont have to haul it long if you dont want to
