I’m planning a couple of days in HCM next week (tues-thurs). Feeling a bit apprehensive as i hate big busy cities! I want to visit the war remnants museam & do some shopping (i fly home on thurs eve). Are there any other MUST do/see things in HCM? What do you recommend? I prefer to walk places so hoping to keep it simple & compact. Also any recommendations for cheap hotels near the war museam would be welcome. Also if theres anyone in HCM next week who wants to meet up (solo older women like me maybe) then that would be lovely!

Independence Palace (actually a museum and where the tanks drove through the metal gates signifying the end of the war) and Ben Thanh Market which is an experience. Walking Street in the evening…

We did a motorcycle tour with the wonderful Anna, booked via Tripadvisor. Would recommend. She took us to some great places on the city and it was a lot of fun.

Visit the post office, beautifully historic building next to the cathederal, send yourself a postcard as a memory.

Balance your emotions before visiting HCM, otherwise it could end up being a nightmare.

Independent Palace is a must see and District 1 indeed best place to stay. The Hammock or Odys Boutique Hotel next to each other

Meet local people, learn about culture, religion and daily life. Why should you go to Vietnam (or any other country) if you dont have that on the top of your list.

Do one of the ‘free’ scooter tours with a local – you will still need to pay for fuel and tip but a great way to see HCMC and you can tell them what you would like to see – highlights for us were the burning monk monument, secret tunnel cafe down a wet market lane, and noodle soup sonewhere in district 5. They pick you up and drop where you like. Just google free hcmc tours and pick one with good reviews. We had 2 female uni students and they were passionate and extremely knowledgable
