I’m planning a couple of days in HCM next week (tues-thurs). Feeling a bit apprehensive as i hate big busy cities! I want to visit the war remnants museam & do some shopping (i fly home on thurs eve). Are there any other MUST do/see things in HCM? What do you recommend? I prefer to walk places so hoping to keep it simple & compact. Also any recommendations for cheap hotels near the war museam would be welcome. Also if theres anyone in HCM next week who wants to meet up (solo older women like me maybe) then that would be lovely!

There are so many good, reasonably priced hotels in HCMC. For a quick visit I’d stay in District 1, somewhere near Dong Khoi St. You’ll be near the Independence Palace, the Continental Hotel, the Opera House, Ben Thanh Market, Book Street and so many other good things go to see. Grab rides are your friend, very cheap and reliable. Also go to the top level of Bitexco Tower for an amazing view of the city. Another treat is a sunset drink at the Majestic Hotel on the river. (Also in District 1). Hope you have an enjoyable visit.

District 1 is definitely where you want to stay. I was able to walk to the museum’s. The Post Office, Church and some are all located in the same area.

Do the evening river cruise, it’s lovely. There is a great Mexican bar close by called malt. Be careful crossing the road.

Jump on the big red hop on hop off bus and it will give you a tour of the city. Stops at war remnants so you can hop off there and go for a visit. Such an emotional experience. The post office is fascinating and worth a look. Definitely hit up the street food markets for the biggest variety and freshest street food. Bin than markets are great for value- be prepared to haggle and walk away. They will try hold your arm until you buy. We stayed at the palace hotel. It had everything we needed. Simple, clean, friendly and amazing breakfast buffet daily for around $30-$40/night. The reunification Palace is also worth a visit too. There is so much to do and see. I wish we stayed longer in HCM and cannot wait to get back. There is so much history there.
