Hi, we’re going Vietnam in March 🤩 Has anyone done the Ha Giang Loop solo (without a tour)? Me and my partner are thinking of just hiring a bike and doing it ourselves over 3 days. Would love to know any tips/ good stop offs / accommodation recommendations 🥰

When you want to go
If a bicycle, you will need to be fit due to the mountains. If a motorbike you better be legal (IDP (1968) + home Country Licence both endorsed for motorcycles) as you will be stopped by the police in Ha Giang multiple times.
We did that and it was amazing. However, I have to tell you that my partner is a really experienced motorbiker so I didn’t have to worry about what’s gonna hapen if…there were quite a few “ifs” like super winding roads, dangerous slopes and thick fog (it was in January I don’t know what’s the weather like in March). All in all I would say that if you are brave enough and trust yourself and your skills, do it! 😉
Yeah I’ve heard very strict rules apply now so maybe Google or double check, I did a solo ride with a tour company – 5 days. Ha Giang and Cao Bang. He was pulled over twice and licence checked ✔️ so make sure you know the latest rules and regs now. I have heard you need motorbike licence and international motorbike/ drivers permit too. My driver said they are very strict on it now too. Good luck 🍀
The biggest issue for non-Vietnamese is the license. Is it ones issue from home country valid in Vietnam?

I did it two up without a guide, just used booking.com for accommodation, booked one day at a time, on a hired bike. Used the regular loop as a guide but took some more quiet roads and tracks.
3 days ? lol
Don’t forget your IDP, and you’ll need a different one for Cambodia, just in case you’re thinking of that.
Get ready to pay a fine for not having a license…. check points everywhere on the loop…
