Hi everyone 😊At first I thought the tailor thing in Hoi An was overrated and that I definitely don’t need more clothes… but after *so* many friends who visited kept recommending it, I’m starting to reconsider.Anyone here actually did it and can share their experience?How does the process work? How long does it take? And is it really something you shouldn’t miss?Would also love specific tailor recommendations 🙏

I was recently in Vietnam. My sister’s family all had multiple suits, etc. made. I was not interested. I’m picky with clothes and even return things from stores after trying them on. My weight also fluctuates. I don’t need more clothes. It’s not cheap. I didn’t jump on the bandwagon on this despite all my friends telling me I needed to do this. I would feel so guilty when it was time to declutter them.
I had a dress made there last week. I used a tailor recommended by our hotel. I got measured on Tuesday and collected the dress on Thursday it fitted perfectly. I did go with a picture of a dress I had seen and they made it exactly as I asked
We often bring our own fabric & notions with us to VN to get clothing made. We noticed that sometimes the zippers, buttons & thread weren’t great quality. If you have a favorite dress or blouse they can copy it in other fabrics. Best tailor work is generally men’s clothing.
I didn’t do it in 2020 when others did it. I just got back a week ago and did it this time. Although, it is pricier than an item you can buy online or elsewhere, I wanted the experience. I’m so glad I did it and love the fit. If ur debating, just do it, so u will know whether you would ever do it again. I made 2 summer dresses. One thing I learned from my research, do a piece u dont already own and do a piece u would wear often. My friends did suits in 2020 and I doubt they even wear it once a year. They could have finished it in one day for me, but we made other plans so went back the very next day for the fitting and final adjustments.
My advice is go to those shops and watch people come in for fitting. After sitting for a few hours at the BeBe to wait for my son’s friends (3 young men) trying on their suits (my son had one made in Hanoi the year before, so he sat out this time), both me and my son agreed that the one he made in Hanoi was 10 times better with about 30%-40% more expensive. And when we were waiting, we also saw lots of people came in for fitting and to be honest , we didn’t think they were good at all, but looked like everyone was happy with their clothes. Hence the good reviews. Maybe they didn’t know how much better looking they (the clothes) could be if they find a right place? The one in Hanoi took time, though. Not 1 or 2 days like in HoiAn.
I noticed someone mentioned this tailor in this group and I’ve pinned it to Google maps if I make it down to Hoi An from Hanoi (will be my first trip in mid March).
I have been to Hoi A many times and my entire wardrobe has been made by Spring Tailor, Hoang Dieu St.
I was also on the fence about it but since the friend I was travelling with wanted to do it, I thought why not? They made me 2 sets of silk pjs based on photos I brought in. I walked in at 5 pm, did a fitting the next day same time and after minor adjustments went home with my pjs. There are a lot of tailors you can choose from that all offer similar services. It’s worth it to have that custom tailor experience. We went to Lamy Tailors in Hoi An.
We have just had our clothes delivered to the hotel from Lua Tailoring, they were one of the hotel recommended tailors. We are delighted. My husband is very tall and has trouble with sleeve length on shirts and length on shorts. He got three shirts, two shorts and I got a skirt. Went in chose style and fabric, went back next day for fitting, minor alterations were required which they did and delivered the next day. Two days total. Same with custom made shoes.
We just went and got ours from 45 Thu Tailor. They took 2 days to finish 3 suits and two dress shirts for my husband, and 3 dresses, 1 pair of matching vest and dress pants for me, and they altered my own clothes I brought from home for free. We paid 23 million VND. You walk in, they pair you with a tailor. You can let them know what design you’re looking for or ask them for inspiration. Some other places have binders of inspiration. This place showed me their Instagram. They help you pick the right fabric and color and then take your measurements. We had a great experience and would definitely go back. We took these videos of us in our clothes before they made the final adjustments and ironing of the clothes.
