Update** this post is a warning not a field to discuss my story ✌️I have all documents needed ( IDP, A license , Insurance, Rental contract, Helmet, day lights, Visa …) ⚠️ Travel Warning – Ha Giang Loop Police StopSharing my experience to help other travelers stay informed.📌Location : POLOCE CHECK POINT ,Quản Bạ, Tuyên Quang, Vietnam🕒 January 26th, 2026 – around 11 AMI was stopped by police while riding a Honda 110cc motorbike on the Ha Giang Loop. I showed both my Tunisian driving license and my International Driving Permit. My national license legally allows me to ride motorcycles up to **124cc**, so the international permit should cover the same category.Despite this, the officers took my keys and documents and claimed I was not allowed to drive the bike. They demanded **4,000,000 VND**. I realized something was wrong when they said *“If you pay, no one will stop you again.”*After bargaining, they accepted **2,000,000 VND**, gave no official ticket, and let me continue.Vietnam has been amazing overall, actually it’s the best country I’ve ever visited — I’m sharing this only to warn other travelers to know their rights, ask for an official receipt, and stay calm if something similar happens.

They do it too the locals as well!!! We got stopped going into Danang and my driver was told to pay so much or his fine would be a lot more and he would have to go to court!

It’s better to ride with a local guide . This won’t happen with them. Vietnam has a lot of corruption sadly and as a foreigner your an easy target.

Is tunisian IDP not from 1949 Geneva convention??? Vietnam only allows 1968 Vienna convention 🤷

Don’t come to our country to spoil the authorities. If you do nothing wrong, never give bribery.

Was your IDP 1949 or 1968? Vietnam only recognises 1968 which means if you only have 1949 you are riding illegally according to Vietnam law. I was stopped 3 times in Ha Giang with a 1968 Motorbike IDP + home motorbike licence back in December and no problems, no fine and the Police apologised for stopping me!

I had the same experience when driving over that bridge as your going to Han Market, They demanded 2 million vnd & said I could go when I paid, Your man just pocketed the money, didn’t take my information & gave no ticket, nothing, corruption at its finest 😂
