Update** this post is a warning not a field to discuss my story ✌️I have all documents needed ( IDP, A license , Insurance, Rental contract, Helmet, day lights, Visa …) ⚠️ Travel Warning – Ha Giang Loop Police StopSharing my experience to help other travelers stay informed.📌Location : POLOCE CHECK POINT ,Quản Bạ, Tuyên Quang, Vietnam🕒 January 26th, 2026 – around 11 AMI was stopped by police while riding a Honda 110cc motorbike on the Ha Giang Loop. I showed both my Tunisian driving license and my International Driving Permit. My national license legally allows me to ride motorcycles up to **124cc**, so the international permit should cover the same category.Despite this, the officers took my keys and documents and claimed I was not allowed to drive the bike. They demanded **4,000,000 VND**. I realized something was wrong when they said *“If you pay, no one will stop you again.”*After bargaining, they accepted **2,000,000 VND**, gave no official ticket, and let me continue.Vietnam has been amazing overall, actually it’s the best country I’ve ever visited — I’m sharing this only to warn other travelers to know their rights, ask for an official receipt, and stay calm if something similar happens.

Very common knowledge as the police have been stopping travellers for the last three years.

Your national 124ccm is nothing worth in Vietnam because they don’t have this category. You need A for this bikes and this is not a secret. It’s clearly your fault and you driving illegally in Vietnam.

Apparently, even with IDP, you can never be legal to operate a vehicle in VN. Even locals still gets fined with VN driving licence, quoting improper documentations. Sad, but true. As a foreigner, only if you have Long Term Pass (married to a local) something like that, then you can apply some sort of driving licence to “legally” operate a vehicle.

Bribes are normal in Vietnam for this, you did a good job to get it to 2Mill.

It is such a scam to not accept international drivers licenses!

It’s 2 million, doesn’t matter if you have a license or not. Just plan with this money. You will not do the trip without getting stopped. Still cheaper than an easy rider.
