No ice ever! Brush teeth, rinse with bottled water. Drink only bottled water, actually mostly beer!
I had no problems in Vietnam, even though Ive had major problems in other tropical countries. Don’t drink the tap water, but it’s okay for brushing your teeth. I had iced coffee and other drinks every day, with no problems whatsoever.
No. 99% of ice is commercially produced from RO filtered water. The tap water is in fact treated and considered pathologically safe but may contain high levels of contaminants such as metals or chemicals like ammonium (Hanoi) A small amount isn’t going to harm you. Many people believe that their food is washed and prepared with filtered water, this is rarely the case in Vietnam. Illness is very rarely caused by the water in Vietnam but is still not recommended for drinking.

All the Aussie Viets with me ending up getting sick too, with stomach stuff. This was 28 years ago – last year, I was having soup, coffee, etc, with no problems, in n Saigon. To be safe though, stay away from ice cubes!
