Depends. Tap water in hotels and modern apartments often go through a whole building filter and softener. Still would not drink it without additional RO filters which most modern places have. Boiling will probably save you from the runs but not heavy metal contamination; not that it would affect you for a short trip so wouldn’t stress over it. You have individually bagged ice made by filtered water, stored and transported in bag. Then you have ice blocks; open air and surface storage. Hand chopped from the back of a scooter with a rusty knife. If something doesn’t require the ice I would forgo it. Otherwise pick places that are obviously formal businesses with good turnover. Good rule in general to be honest. Have fun, don’t get bogged down in the small stuff just adjust your risk tolerance to your comfort level

There’s always going to be someone chime in with the ” I’ve been here 5 years or 10 times and never been sick” So they basically tell you it’s safe for everyone when that’s not the case! Everyone has a different metabolism and gut sensitivity balance! Some people can take a swing out of the Ganges and never get sick. So lucky ! Others can be unlucky enough to find the restaurant with the tap water ice cube and spend the next 3 days close to the toilet! Ruined half the holiday !

The ice cubes come in sealed plastic bags from the same places as the osmosis drinking water you see in the large blue bottles. Both is safe.

It was recommended to us to use bottled water for drinking, but tap water is ok for brushing teeth. Or, boil the water. Every place has a hot water kettle. Boil your water if you’re out of bottled water. Also, if the ice cubes have a hole in the middle, they have been processed with safe water. Most places use these ice cubes.

Before ice in drink harm you, these thoughts will harm you first. Experience it, don’t listen to what others say. Let your trip be more amazing than a thousand reasons to worry.

I’ve lived here 16 years, drink coffee and drinks with ice, brush teeth with water. Never an issue. Keep in mind, all salads are (mostly) washed in water, all fruit, the cutlery, dishes, chopsticks you use, everywhere are washed in water, cold water, nobody washes up with hot water. This is normal Vietnam. Just relax, stop overthinking. More people get sick from eating foods they’re not used too, dodgy banh mi shops and cheap alcohol. Just enjoy !
