SapaBe aware when booking— the tiered rice fields are green in June and July, yellow in August and September and then brown the rest of the year. We chose the “home stay” version wanting to experience some of the local life. The ride from Hanoi was close to 6 hrs in a bus (pic #1). Well I had no idea 🤷🏻♀️😆. They made 2 stops (breakfast & lunch). Make sure to bring cash b/c you will need 3K dong to use the bathroom. It was suppose to be a 4 hr hike to the home stay but after a 30 min walk I called a taxi which got us there 3 hrs ahead of schedule. 🥳Our friendly guide gave us a tour of her village & home. You just don’t know how good you have it until you see how others live!

They are lovely people who will do their best for you. You don’t need to talk them down.
But isn’t it interesting that despite living with much less, they don’t seem to be any less happy? In fact, many seem happier. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Sapa, despite the brown.
If they are happy, who has it better than that?
June is beautiful! This was from our 2016 trip.
We had a similar not-so- good experience… our tour guide picked us up at our hotel – we had no idea we were walking the whole way … started taking us down a mud mountain – literally mud – we thought we were in their dump … it had rained the day before so it was wet, muddy, and very steep … she didn’t care if we were unable to navigate the steep terrain w no help … just keep on going – we finally stopped and left – she didn’t even look back … 4 out of 5 us left – full of mud and exhausted … Terrible.
They have nothing but they are happy we have all we desire and always complaining about everything
Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
We loved our home stay and hiking in Sapa. We were prepared for the pretty intense hike – local village women walked with us and held my sister’s hand during the steep parts. My host guide made us each bamboo walking sticks. We truly felt immersed in the local culture and it was a highlight of our Vietnam trip.
Sapa today. Stunning!
As you stated…you had no idea.
