I recently saw some comments about some uncomfortable situations people have had as overweight folks.

I recently saw some comments about some uncomfortable situations people have had as overweight folks. Maybe I’m being paranoid but now I’m second guessing going to the beach or wearing shorts. First time in SEA, I’m already 5’8 so I’m a giant but I’m chunky (170) with stretch marks and cellulite. How thick does my skin need to be? Should I pack a one-piece with shorts? A circus tent?*Thanks for all the comments! I try to be respectful of the cultures I interact with so I appreciate the insight. While I don’t plan on being a total chameleon, I also don’t want to be the “ugly American” stereotype.*

Only one time in Hanoi a driver was trying to over charge me. When I refused to pay he flipped open his wallet said he was police. Still refused so he then said it was fat tax 🤣 he still never got the extra money

I would want to b3 respectful of the Vietnamese culture without feeling like an overdressed clown. I’m 5’10” overweight 180 lbs. I’m ok wearing a one piece at the beach but I see some ladies naked. Vietnamese don’t say much but they are not comfortable with it.

The only thing to be concerned with is to wear your beachwear only on the beach. It’s people who walk around in their bathing suits off the beach that make others uncomfortable. 😳

just a funny story we have been 2 times. I have very very big boobs. the ladies are absolutely amazed by them. asking to touch, wanting to buy. Just remember if going to beach wear your shorts, going to a temple dress with respect for them.

Vietnamese people don’t show a lot of skin, so you should cover up a bit more out of respect, not because of your body size.

T-shirt & shorts regardless of size & if you’re over 20yrs old. Stop worrying, we’re all the same! lol

I would say the dirty looks would be if the swim suit is inappropriate and or the conduct is.

I’m 5 foot 3 and 81kg so about 175 pound and a large bust. Nobody cared and if they did I never noticed. I’ve also found clothes in my size you just have to look about and ask. Most the shops if they don’t have the size just apologize. As for going on the beach just wear what you want it’s a beach. Have fun go in the sea and remember just because vietnamese are small doesn’t mean all the other nations who travel there are too. You will find many people who are larger then average
