I recently saw some comments about some uncomfortable situations people have had as overweight folks. Maybe I’m being paranoid but now I’m second guessing going to the beach or wearing shorts. First time in SEA, I’m already 5’8 so I’m a giant but I’m chunky (170) with stretch marks and cellulite. How thick does my skin need to be? Should I pack a one-piece with shorts? A circus tent?*Thanks for all the comments! I try to be respectful of the cultures I interact with so I appreciate the insight. While I don’t plan on being a total chameleon, I also don’t want to be the “ugly American” stereotype.*

Haha. As a fat girl myself I just don’t worry about it anymore. No one is looking at you unless you’re making a spectacle of yourself. Adapt to the culture and be respectful – the people here really don’t care what you look like and they are used to us fat westerners. PS: get over the term “fat” as an insult or you’re gonna be a mess.
Just be respectful to the culture and don’t be inappropriate with how much you bare. Just be prepared for when you walk past clothes shops and the ladies yell “we have big size for you”…I’ve copped it a few times and just laugh. I love the bluntness.
Please please just go to the beach. You don’t sound chunky and if you were, really no one is going to say anything or even look twice. I’m traveling SEA all over now and have been to beaches and have seen all shapes and sizes and everyone is minding their own business and having a great time.
I was a size 18 last time I was in Vietnam, no one was blatantly rude, but I did notice looks and whispers from a few locals, but i think it was more because they werent used to seeing someone my size? I was also told I wouldn’t fit anything in their shops and sort of bustled out like I might have been bad for business….but that was all. I’m going this time as a size 10, and I’m told I will still be considered large, but I think we just have to accept that their concept of size is different to ours, it doesn’t actually matter in the scheme of things….they’re still very friendly, the place itself is incredible…..so just go and enjoy yourself!!
No one cares . It’s only if you want to buy clothes you may struggle. I’m a size 10 and needed XL. It’s amazing enjoy 😊
you carnt buy hardly any pre-made clothes if size 16 onwards . you can have them made.
I’m fat – size 18 to 20 AU size.
You’ll be fine. I’m a round one – far shorter than you and heavier. We are at Phu Quoc right now and there is every body size and shape in every type of bathing suit you can imagine!! Love the body you are in ❤️ and be respectful of cultural norms at temples, etc.
Wear what you are comfortable in. The Vietnamese people are quite conservative, but on the whole a lovely people. I am 6ft, 98kg so tall and large framed, been here a week and not felt judged at all. Asian people are naturally smaller. Most are slim, some are rounded. It just is, don’t overthink it. Be prepared to cover your knees and shoulders in some places. Find your confidence, nothing is more attractive than that.
People should dress appropriately for the culture. Regardless of where they are. I’ve seen some shocking abuses of this all over Asia. Usually by smaller framed people. They should be wearing a circus tent because they’re clowns. Just be respectful of the native people.
