I recently saw some comments about some uncomfortable situations people have had as overweight folks.

I recently saw some comments about some uncomfortable situations people have had as overweight folks. Maybe I’m being paranoid but now I’m second guessing going to the beach or wearing shorts. First time in SEA, I’m already 5’8 so I’m a giant but I’m chunky (170) with stretch marks and cellulite. How thick does my skin need to be? Should I pack a one-piece with shorts? A circus tent?*Thanks for all the comments! I try to be respectful of the cultures I interact with so I appreciate the insight. While I don’t plan on being a total chameleon, I also don’t want to be the “ugly American” stereotype.*

Just wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Don’t let anyone ruin your vacation over a comment / remark. If they say something mean, just tell them thank you for your compliment and walk away. Just enjoy yourself.

I am overweight bigger than you have described yourself but Vietnam is and has always been the one place I feel comfortable to just swim and be myself. Yes I respect the culture and wear a full swim suit and board shorts, also a dress to beach. But don’t overthink it. Enjoy your holiday and relax. After multiple visits to Vietnam I have never encountered anyone that has commented on my size. lol but the hairdressers comment on my grey hair 😛

Huhh?? Only thing you need to focus on is not being so self-critical. I’m 5’7 over 200 &… thought never crossed my mind in Danang Beach. Really ALL shapes & sizes come out to enjoy the landscape. Attire varies- individuals wear what’s comfortable for them. If you come across anyone being critical.. it’s a “them” issue. Don’t make it yours

I’m 12-14 and was never made feel uncomfortable by Vietnamese people. I got called fat here yesterday by an American guy.

Be comfortable in your own skin with what you would usually wear. That said if you are doing anything cultural temples etc be aware of covering your arms and legs

My aunt set me straight on worrying about how I dress or look when traveling. When I was 18 and obsessing about how I looked when going to a concert in NYC, she said “You will never see any of these people again in your lifetime. No one is going to be looking at you and not one of them will remember you 5 minutes after they have seen you. Just be comfortable. “. I still think of her decades after first hearing this advice. I followed it on the 18 day tour we did with 12 strangers. I packed for myself and not to impress anyone.

Hi, we are from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and women here wear the tiniest bikinis ever known to man. Once I asked a Brazilian friend why women here wear such tiny clothing she told me: “Darling, we all wear the same size. Small, regardless of our size”. That you’re already concerned means you will find the right balance about what’s comfortable to you and also respecting Asian culture.

Go! Be comfortable. Enjoy yourself and don’t think worry about it. A lot of expats all shapes sizes and ages in bikinis at the beach. No one will care. No one’s posting pics for the world to see and honestly it’s what’s in the inside and how you treat others that matters- not how you look in a bathing suit. Just go have fun.

I am worried as well after reading about quite low weight limits at theme parks and waterparks, apparently they weigh you at every ride and are quite rude if you are over. Now paranoid about taking the kids out of fear of being embarrassed.
