If there are three or more of you, going on your own is cheaper and gives you more control over the day. One or two people, the tour works out about the same or better, so you may as well let someone else drive.

That’s the short answer. The rest of this is the prices, the transport options, and a few things about Ba Na Hills that are easy to get wrong from Hoi An.

Quick Answer: A Ba Na Hills tour from Hoi An costs around $66 and includes transport, a guide, the cable car, park entry and a buffet lunch. Doing it yourself means a 1,000,000 VND ticket plus a car, which is cheaper from three people upwards. Since January 2026 the cable car ticket is valid for 72 hours, so a foggy day isn’t necessarily wasted money if you’re organising your own transport.

Practical Notes:
- Hoi An to Ba Na Hills is 50km, about 90 minutes each way.
- Cable cars run 8am to 10pm. The park is busiest from 9am to noon.
- The summit is 1,487m and often in cloud. Sun World has a live webcam (through their Facebook).
- The Golden Bridge is inside the park, so you need the full ticket to see it.
- Six hours is enough. Four if you only want the bridge and the cable car.

Self-guided here means the 1,000,000 VND ticket plus a private car with the driver waiting, split between you. The tour is the small-group full-day one with lunch included.

Solo travellers are better off on the tour. You’d be paying for a whole car on your own, and the guide comes free with the alternative.

For two people it’s close enough that price shouldn’t decide it.

Buy online. The gate kiosks are fine but the morning queue is long.

The ticket includes the round-trip cable car, the Golden Bridge, the French Village, Le Jardin d’Amour, Linh Ung Pagoda (not the one in Son Tra), Fantasy Park and the funicular railway. The wax museum, the alpine coaster and the wine cellar are charged separately.

The Ticket Now Lasts Three Days

From 1 January 2026, a Ba Na Hills cable car ticket is valid for 72 hours from first use, with unlimited rides in that time.

Most guides online still describe it as a single-day ticket because they were written before the change.

This matters if you’re organising your own transport. Ba Na Hills is at 1,487 metres and is in cloud often, especially between September and January.

If you go up and can’t see anything, you can come back the next day on the same ticket. You’d still need to pay for another car, so it isn’t free, but it’s an option you don’t have on a tour.

Getting There from Hoi An

Fifty kilometres, roughly ninety minutes, inland and uphill.

900,000 to 1,200,000 VND for the day. This is the easiest way to do it independently.

You agree a pickup time in the morning, the driver waits at the base station car park, and you come down when you’re ready.

Any hotel in Hoi An will arrange one. Check that waiting time is included in the price and not charged by the hour.

Grab

500,000 to 700,000 VND each way. It works going up.

Coming back is less reliable. There are drivers around the base station but fewer in the evening, and it’s a long way from anywhere. Take your driver’s number on the way up and message him for the return.

Motorbike

I wouldn’t. It’s 50km each way on a climbing road, and if you stay until the lights come on you’ll be riding back in the dark. There’s also nowhere sensible to leave a helmet for seven hours.

Shuttle buses and tours you don’t join

Some Da Nang operators sell a transport-only shuttle with a ticket bundled in, which is cheaper than a full tour and drops you at the base station to do your own thing.

Most of them leave from Da Nang, not Hoi An. If you find one that collects from Hoi An it’s worth comparing (Updated: I found it), but the pickup times are usually the same early morning slot the standard tours use, so you lose the timing advantage that made going independently worth doing.

What Time to Go Up

Standard tours pick up in Hoi An around 7am so they’re at the cable car when it opens at 8. That’s why queues are worst between nine and noon.

The afternoon is quieter and cooler. One of the larger tour listings says so itself, noting that from March to September the 1pm and 1:30pm slots have fewer people and shorter waits.

If you’re going independently, leaving Hoi An around 11am gets you there for half twelve. Cable cars run until 10pm, so you can stay for the Golden Bridge lit up after dark and still be back for a late dinner.

If you’re booking a tour, most operators offer a 1pm departure for the same price.

The Weather

Sun World usually runs a live camera on its fanpage. Look at it on the morning you plan to go.

April to August is clearer and busier. September to January is the wet season in Da Nang and the mountain is unpredictable.

The camera isn’t a guarantee. It can be clear at nine and clouded over by eleven. It’s still better than guessing.

What’s Up There

It’s a theme park built to look like a French village, on top of a mountain, with a long cable car and a bridge held up by two large stone hands.

The Golden Bridge is what most people come for. It’s 150 metres, it takes about twenty minutes to walk and photograph, and there’s usually a queue for the best spot.

The rest is the French Village and its square, the flower gardens, Linh Ung Pagoda, a wine cellar cut into the rock, and Fantasy Park, which is a large indoor games and rides complex.

The cable car is the part I’d rate highest. It’s twenty minutes over forest and on a clear day the view is the best thing about the trip.

Six hours covers everything without rushing. Four is enough if you’re only interested in the bridge and the ride up.

The WOW Pass

Silver is 300,000 VND and gives you priority access to the cable cars, restaurants, funiculars and the cabaret show.

Buy it if you’re going in summer, at a weekend, over Tet, or with children who won’t queue. On a weekday afternoon in the low season I’d skip it.

Gold is 1,000,000 VND and adds the games and a reserved restaurant table. That’s another full ticket price for queue priority, which is too much.

Food Up There

The buffet is the standard option and it’s included if you buy the 1,300,000 VND ticket or book a tour with lunch. It’s a large canteen-style spread, decent enough, and very busy between noon and half one.

If you’re going independently, you don’t have to take the buffet. There are a lot of restaurants and cafés across the site, including a couple in the French Village square with outdoor seating.

Prices are theme park prices, so a coffee is 60,000 to 80,000 VND and a main dish is 150,000 to 250,000 VND.

There’s a Starbucks and a few Vietnamese chains as well, if you want something familiar. You can’t bring your own food in, though nobody minds a water bottle.

From April to August the buffet restaurants get overwhelmed. If you’re there in those months, either eat early, eat late, or eat à la carte.

Going with Children

Fantasy Park makes this one of the better family days near Da Nang, and it’s indoors, which helps when it rains.

Under 1 metre is free. From 1m to 1.39m the ticket is 800,000 VND. Above 1.39m children pay the adult price, and some tours add a 350,000 VND surcharge on top of the tour price for taller children, so read that before booking.

The cable car cabins are enclosed and steady, so most children are fine. But anyone who is seriously afraid of heights should not do this at all.

For younger children, the cooking class and basket boat is a shorter day with much less walking.

Is Ba Na Hills Worth It?

It depends on what you’re expecting. If you want mountain scenery and colonial history, no. The village was built in the 2010s and there isn’t much of the mountain left visible between the attractions.

If you want a very good cable car, a famous bridge and a theme park, it delivers all three.

The million-dong ticket is what makes people hesitate, and it is expensive by Vietnamese standards. If theme parks aren’t your thing and you’re short on days, I’d spend one of them in Hoi An itself instead.

When a Tour Makes More Sense

If you’re travelling alone, on cost.

If you don’t want to arrange a car and agree terms with a driver.

If you want a guide, which is a fair thing to want because there’s more to the history than the photos suggest.

If you’d rather have something you can cancel in one click, which matters in the wet season.

Short Answers to Common Questions

How long is the cable car? About twenty minutes on the direct line. There are several routes and one of them held a Guinness record for length.

Can you see the Golden Bridge without paying? No. It’s inside the park, near the top cable car station, and the only way up is with a ticket.

How many hours do you need? Four if you want the bridge and the cable car. Six to eight if you’re doing Fantasy Park and the gardens as well.

Is it open in the rain? Yes, and it operates in most weather. Cable cars stop in high wind or lightning, which is rare but does happen.

Is Ba Na Hills closer to Hoi An or Da Nang? Da Nang, by roughly 20km. From Hoi An you’re looking at 90 minutes each way.

Can you stay overnight? Yes, there’s a Mercure at the top. It’s the only way to have the place quiet in the early morning, and it’s expensive.

One Thing I Can’t Confirm Yet

The 72-hour ticket policy is new this year and I’ve only read the announcement, not tested the second day myself.

If you go and use it, I’d like to know whether the gate accepted it without any argument, and whether it’s the same code or you have to do something at the ticket office first. That would be useful to have on this page from someone who’s actually stood there.
