You’ll get into Yen Minh at the end of the first day of a four-day loop, after Bac Sum, the Quan Ba climb and a long run through the pines, and the homestay decides whether night one is a party or a proper sleep. Yen Minh homestays split that way more cleanly than anywhere else on the loop.

The two I’d choose between are Bống Bang and Tom Homestay, and I’ve stayed at both. Bống Bang is the social one, stone and wood, a fire pit, a big dinner and karaoke. Tom is a family house down a quiet lane with big rooms and a bathtub. They’re about two minutes’ walk apart, so it really is just a choice about what kind of night you want.

- Karaoke stops at around 10pm at most of them.

If it’s your first loop and you’re on your own, Bống Bang. If you want to wake up on day two having actually slept, Tom. That’s most of it.

The rest comes down to what night one of a four-day loop feels like. You’ve done about 100km from Ha Giang city, you’re stiff, and day two is the long one up to Lung Cu and Dong Van. Some people want to meet the group they’re about to spend three more days with, and some people want a hot bath and to be asleep by nine.

Best Yen Minh homestays — Bong Bang homestay: The liveliest, best-fed homestay on the loop

This is the one most people have heard of, and the rating holds up. The house is built from stone and wood, which gives it more character than the concrete guesthouses around it, and the dinner is some of the best food I’ve had anywhere on the loop, a long table of dishes and the rice wine going round. After that there’s a fire pit and karaoke, and on a busy night with a couple of tour groups in, it’s a party.

The private rooms are comfortable and properly dark, which after a day in the sun is worth a lot, and they have air conditioning. The walls are thin, though, so whatever’s happening downstairs you’ll hear until it stops, usually around ten.

The shared rooms are the cheaper option and get cold in winter. It’s a busy, well-used house, and I’ve seen the odd cockroach, which in a stone building in the mountains I’d expect.

I’d book a private room, eat, stay up for the fire, and bring earplugs for when I’ve had enough.

Bong Bang Homestay 2 is a separate building about ten minutes’ walk east, with the same phone number, +84 852 803 803. It’s newer, with more modern rooms, balconies with a view, and a restaurant and karaoke until 10pm, and it runs as more of a party hotel. It’s fine, but it’s a different stay from the stone house, so it’s worth being sure which one you’ve booked.

Tom is where I stay when I want to sleep. It’s a family house down a small lane off the main road, run by a couple, and the lady of the house speaks English.

The rooms are surprisingly big for Yen Minh, with proper beds, a smart TV and in some of them a bathtub, which on the first night of the loop is the single best thing in town. Laundry is 40,000 VND a load, however much you put in, which after one dusty day is worth doing.

Dinner is a family meal with the other guests and the hosts, a big spread and the rice wine coming round, and it’s warm and friendly without turning into a party. Some nights there’s a bit of karaoke with the family, and then the lane goes quiet.

QT Motorbikes and Tours uses Tom for some of its groups, so you may share dinner with a tour, and it’s also easy to book on the day on Agoda if you’re riding yourself. Late checkout at noon is a small thing that helps if day two starts slowly.

The view is the reason. Step out of the gate and there are rice fields with the mountains behind, and at sunset it’s the prettiest spot in Yen Minh.

Private rooms and bathrooms are good and the food is good. The big dorm is a room of around twenty mattresses on the floor, and I’d avoid it. A lot of tour groups use Mầm Đá on the last night of their loop, coming back the other way.

Pura Homestay

This is the one with a pool, a deep one, plus a billiard table and a bar, and dinner at 150,000 VND is a huge spread. Karaoke runs until 10pm. In the busiest weeks I’d confirm the booking the day before.

AKa Homestay

The better rooms have pebble bathroom floors and a wooden tub, there’s a self-serve bar in the back garden on the honour system, and dinner is hot pot. The cheapest rooms downstairs are small, windowless and thin-walled, so it’s worth paying for one of the nicer ones.

Where Yen Minh Homestays Are, and a Booking Trap

Yen Minh town is small and strung along the road, and most of the homestays are within a few minutes of each other. Bống Bang, Tom, AKa and Pura are all within about 300 metres in the centre. Bong Bang 2 is a ten-minute walk east, and Mầm Đá is further out again among the rice fields in Nà Quang.

The trap is on the booking sites. Du Già used to be part of Yen Minh district, so Agoda and Booking still file Du Già homestays under Yen Minh, and a search for Yen Minh homestays turns up places that are over an hour away on the loop’s southern side.

Some Yen Minh places also show up under Na Hang, and since the 2025 merger every address says Tuyen Quang. I’d check the map pin before paying. If Du Già is actually what you want, that’s in where to stay in Ha Giang.

Yen Minh Homestay Prices and What’s Included

A private room in Yen Minh is around 300,000 VND a night, which is what I paid on my Ha Giang Loop cost receipt, and dorm beds cost less. Dinner is usually extra at 100,000 to 150,000 VND a head, breakfast is often included, and rice wine at dinner is free and generous. Laundry, where it’s offered, is cheap.

On a tour, the room and meals are in the price and the company chooses the homestay, so the question to ask when booking is which Yen Minh homestay they use. The companies themselves are compared in Ha Giang easy riders tour review.

Riding yourself, timing is the other thing. Bống Bang’s check-in window runs from 2pm to 6pm, and with photo stops at Quan Ba most people roll in around five or later, so if you’re going to be late it’s worth a message on the day. Getting a homestay in Yen Minh without booking is usually possible midweek, less so on the October and November weekends when Vietnamese groups come up for the buckwheat.
