I met a retired couple in Phu Quoc (the wife is Vietnamese), and they both said it’s cheaper to eat out than cook at home.

We do travel to Vietnam often and usually stayed at the Airbnb for a month or two. It’s nice to have a kitchen to cook our own meals when we’re tired of eating out or too lazy to go out. The only thing with cook in is that sometimes we can’t find the same spices we used in the US. But, other than that, it’s actually fun to be able to cook sometimes. We usually eat out about 80% of the time and cook in 20% on our extended stay trips.

Why some people are commenting that it’s a waste of time to cook food ? Yes I agree for a short stay but if I stay for like 2 weeks make some of my meals which I like what’s wrong on that ? I always do it lol

Give both a go! Cooking at home is cheap as chips, but you haven’t lived until you’ve tasted the real deal on the streets of Vietnam. It’s simple food done exceptionally well. Even a tough critic like Gordon Ramsay was left speechless by the flavors!

Eat out. So much easier and so cheap. We didn’t cook once at our Airbnb and used the fridge for only drinks and snacks. I think locals eat out because the going prices were like $1-$3 per meal at the truly local places where our Airbnb was. Drinks were .50. Haven’t seen that since I was a kid 40 years ago.

I’ve been living here 17 yrs and married to Vietnamese French Chef. Any cooking we do at home is by me and it’s usually Italian from scratch. Every thing else we eat out because my wife says it’s cheaper to do so on a daily basis. Occasionally when doing charity work in the Mekong Delta we come home with boxes of crabs that Kim will cook in delicious spicy sauces. Hope that puts a different perspective on things.

I don’t know about you but I go to Việt Nam just to eat out 4-5 meals a day for 2 weeks and fly back home. And the foods expense are still cheaper than my flight ticket.
