I’m visiting Vietnam for the first time later this month. Starting my trip in HCMC for 5 nights. I’d like a peaceful beach experience for a week and am considering either ferry to Vung Tau or flight to Phu Quoc (then fly directly back to Thailand).
I’d appreciate any comments or views as to the difference in the beaches of the two places mentioned.

What do people mean by more unique Vietnam stuff?
I just want to get a feel for Vietnam and will have a longer stay next time.
If you have 5 nights in total i’d recommend either staying put in hcmc or taking a trip into the delta and spending one or two nights there.
If you are set on beach then Vung Tau if you are flying in and pit of hcmc. Phu quo if you can fly into hcmc and out of Phu quoc.
I am booked in to HCMC for 5 nights. Either I will take the ferry to Vung Tau or fly to Phu Quoc.

I agree with #1.. Why go to Vietnam for a beach? Thailand will be better but Vietnam has other attractions.
Vung Tau beach, l read was full of rubbish.
This sounds like a slightly longer version of a visa run.
Phu Quoc will keep you in the Pattaya or Phuket mode. Personally I’d opt for Saigon and Vung Tau. More chance to see a modicum of Vietnamese life.
Another vote for Phu Quoc island!
For beach relaxation Phu Quoc is no brainer. But why not beach in Thailand and use the week to do more unique Vietnam stuff instea
