Visa free for Indians? Visa free transit countries? – Phu Quoc Island Forum

Hello!

I tried to find this information but the posts were around 8 years old.

So we are a group travelling from different cities of India and have hopping flights from different countries.

I understand that PHU QUOC is visa free. But if the transit country is Malaysia, Singapore, or Thailand OR Hanoi in Vietnam, then do we need visa of these countries?

Please help . THANKS

Sam, my first visit to Phu Quoc we did the same thing as you and got a visa as advice was vague and better to be safe. Even airline staff had a difficult time working out if we actually needed one.

However there have been numerous reports recently, including since the new SGN terminal opened, of people doing a visa free transfer. Requires going to one of the windows prior to immigration.

Well, a quick search of the forum revealed this post (#5), in this thread –

And, their location states Mumbai, India.

“We travelled to PhuQuoc in March 2023 by transiting at HCMC without a Visa. Though this includes a change of terminal from International to Domestic ( just about 200 meters), we were allowed to transit without Visa.

The most important points are –

1- You should be visiting PhuQuoc island only for your entire holiday. Not allowed to visit mainland Vietnam. Only permitted to transit at airport.

2- On arrival at HCMC airport, walk directly to the special counter before the immigration hall, just across the Visa On Arrival section. The lady checks the documents viz Travel itinerary, hotel reservation vouchers and return flight ticket & then fills out a form in Vietnamese and obtains necessary clearances from the immigration office and generates Boarding Pass for the flight to PhuQuoc, escorts all such passengers after getting the stamping done on passport , up to the domestic terminal.

3- You may hv to share PhuQuoc visa exemption details from IATA or any of the Visa Agencies of Vietnam while Check-in at your departure time & also at immigration clearance.

4- It’s a simple process but takes upto 1 hour to clear.

5- Take a picture of the letter issued by immigration office on arrival as it’s retained by the immigration officer while stamping the passport & may be asked by the immigration officer while returning. Other than this, no extra documents reqd for return journey.

6- Transit time between flights at HCMC or Hanoi should be less than 24 hrs.

7- You should not be visiting any mainland Vietnam city except for airport transit

We had used this Visa free facility for our PhuQuoc island holiday when we flew on Vietjet from India via HCMC & back. Overall transit/ layover at airport was about 6 hrs.

    Hope this helps. Happy holidays.”

And, they’re not the only ones who have transitted.

Niikito, if you fly direct to Phu Quoc from another country and return the same , then you can enter visa free. If you transit in Vietnam, you will have to clear immigration and transfer to domestic terminal, and thus this means it will be wise to arrange a visa in advance. I went through exactly this scenario some weeks ago.

You should not be worry if your ticket is a single PNR for marking a transit in Vietnam. The airline staffs will collaborate with you.

No, a ‘quick’ google search was not at all helpful.

I tried that first. And I’d rather be doubly sure than reach a country without a visa.

I am sure anyone who knows can drop in a yes or no. Not too much to ask perhaps!

    No, you don’t.

As Scott said, search through the forum.

We’ve discussed this topic in great detail.

This is the Vietnam forum so not relevant to Sing, Malay, etc visa requirements.

If you fly into Phu Quoc direct from another country and leave to another country you don’t need a Vietnamese visa.

If transiting through Hanoi then you will go through immigration. If Indians require visas, then you will.

Even a quick Google search for entry by Indians into the other countries will show requirements.
