Is Hanoi walkable to all the main sites or a problem due to all the scooters ?Have 1 full day to pick off North Train St, Tran Quoc Pagoda, St Joseph’s Cathedral, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, shopping time. Would be better to get a driver to take us around to all these or achievable in a day under our own steam?

Very walkable!
I walked everywhere and when way too good I caught scooters to the next site 🙂
I’m so glad you asked bcz thinking about the insane conditions to try to cross the road stresses me out. On vacation I’d normally walk 25k+ steps a day but had visions of being trapped unable to cross roads in big VN cities, unable to literally get across the roads without using Grab. Am planning work trip to Hanoi. Colleague who knows Hanoi well literally halved the radius recommended for hotels bcz of the crazy difficulty Xing roads. Down to about 300m from our pickup points. Many of our colleagues are from African cities that still have decent air quality & few roads with crazy traffic. I think we’ll struggle to get used to VN city traffic.
Easy to walk and why would scooters be a problem.
Scooters aren’t a problem in Hanoi. There are nowhere near as many there in comparison to Saigon.
It’s walkable and then you can do shopping around the St Joseph’s Cathedral, Hang Bong, Hang Gai streets.
Short trip you can use Grab, a day you can visit all places.
