Hi, going to Vietnam in April.

Hi, going to Vietnam in April. We love to try local food wherever we travel – however I’m allergic to chili! Is it easy to ask for no chili? Or avoid chili in food? Thanks ☺️Hi, going to Vietnam in April. We love to try local food wherever we travel – however I’m allergic to chili! Is it easy to ask for no chili? Or avoid chili in food? Thanks ☺️

Do you have a true IgE-mediated allergy or do you have an intolerance or do you just not like chili peppers? It does make a huge difference and there will be cross contamination everywhere and will limit you to very very very few restaurants if it’s an actual allergy. I would say about half the time I buy something as simple as a bánh mi I will find a hidden chili even if I asked for one without. They are on just about every table in raw, dried and fermented sauces. The spoon for the pickled garlic is often used to dish out the chili then returned to the garlic, so that’s off limits. Most bowls of dipping sauce fish sauce, mam nem and the fermented tofu “Chao” have added chili but you can ask them for it without but are still taking a risk. If it’s truly an allergy I would have a card written up in vietnamese with a skull and crossbones ☠️ and carry a minimum of 2 to EpiPens with you at all times.

Vietnamese foods are not spicy. They typically have chili on the side. Not like Thailand.

Don’t worry, Vietnamese food is not spicy. It’s up to you if you want to add chili to your food or just let them know you don’t like spicy food..

You will be given fresh chilli, up to you if you don’t eat it, it’s not used in cooking. But use google translate to make sure if you like

Watch the banh mi, I asked for no chilli so they didn’t add chilli but did use chilli sauce! My fault i wasn’t clear enough, they had done what i asked and added no chilli’s. I found that a couple of times but can’t remember what the other dish was it occurred with.
