Can I ask a realistic question.

Can I ask a realistic question. I see a lot of PRIVATE drivers in the comments. For those that took them over going on a group tour was it because of the size of your group or you truly preferred to just have the driver to yourself and not be around other tourist. I’m coming solo so I’m not sure how cost effective it would be for me to do most of my stuff with private drivers. I’m interested in your feedback.

Hiring a private driver is easy in Vietnam. When using Grab if you like the driver, ask him if he would like to be your driver the next day to take you from A to B then return. Discuss the price ( round-trip) and time and location for the pick up. Then on the day, don’t pay until you finish your round-trip. Use Google translate or ask your hotel people for help. Tell them to write down the stops, for example: Hotel–> A–>B –>Hotel. Total price: 700,000 vnd. Pay at the end of the trip. Get the # of the hotels person just in case you need to call for help. This is a step of caution because most of the Grab drivers are honest, but there are a few reports about mis-communication and the driver asked for more money….

Just use the Grab app (like Uber) for cheap rides where ever you want to go.

I’m doing a mix of both. Private for my custom day trips and shared for other day trips that are including everything we wanted in it anyway

I got a private driver for one day, from Hoi An to Danang sites all day, back to Hoi An. It find it was more convenient overall compared to grabs all day, and he waited for me at all of the sites I wanted to visit. Grabs would probably have equated to the same amount overall. I did get grab to and from airport/ Danang otherwise and mostly grab scooters around Hoi An when it was sweltering hot 🥵

I think a private driver is more economical than grab for longer journeys.

Find a driver is easy in Vietnam but driver who can speak English and guide you around will be challenging! Make sure that you can pay some extra for a tour guide. It is always worthy!
