Tomorrow evening I will travel from Hanoi to Lao Cai by train. Arrival time is 6:25 am. Onwards for the same day I have a train ticket from Hekou North to Kunming (departure 1:28 pm).
I know that I will have to cross the border by foot. My question is, if there will be taxis or other type of transport from the railway station to the border and from the border to the Chinese railway station.
The distances should be quite short, but I don’t want to walk because of the weight of my luggage and of myself…
Does somebody have an idea about the prices?

You do want to go to Xinjie.
But, there are no longer any direct busses from Hekou.
You change busses, or take a share taxi, in Yuanyang (Nansha).
Also, something I should have mentioned before:
There is an hour time difference between Vietnam and China. The border opens at 07:00 Vietnam time, 08:00 China time.
It’s unlikely that you can cross and get to the bus station in one hour.

I’ll follow your advice, overnighting in Hekou does make the most sense.
And separate thank you for the name of the destination (Nansha). Originally I thought it should be XinJie.

That’s what I do.
The bus to Yuanyang (Nansha) departs at 09:00.
I think it’s the only one currently running.
Thanks to all for the info, hope no one minds if I piggy-back on this thread with a follow-up question.
If I were to travel to Yuanyang area after crossing the border and hoping to take the last bus (9:30AM), is it advisable to overnight on the Chinese side?
Has anyone done that trip and can recommend the optimal way of reaching Yuanyang from North Vietnam if I miss that bus?

Right, no permit required. Just a valid passport, that‘s it. (of course if you live in a country like the EU-countries, which don‘t require a visa).

No permit is required to enter or travel through Hekou.
Hi Matthias. What documentation did you need to cross into China here? I’m Irish so don’t need a visa, but I read somewhere I might need a travel permit for Hekou. Is that true?

I don’t see why not. I never thought to try it as there are many taxis and they are really inexpensive.
Another thing:
The drivers just assume that we (tourists) are going to the railway station.
It takes me a bit of “explaining” to reach the bus station.
