Nho Que river boat ride: Ultimate Ha Giang solo guide (2027)

The Nho Que river boat ride costs 150,000 VND and takes about an hour. Being on your own helps here, and that surprised me the first time. The boats only leave when they’re full, so one spare seat gets filled before four do, and a solo traveller can also do the thing a group can’t be bothered to do, which is stay behind at the café on the far bank and come back whenever they like.

So this is the Nho Que river and Tu San canyon boat trip written for one person: what it costs, which dock, how long the whole detour really takes, and when I’d skip the boat and use the viewpoint on the pass.

• Quick Answer: The Nho Que river boat ride runs from a dock below Ma Pi Leng pass through Tu San canyon, takes 60 to 90 minutes, and costs 150,000 VND per adult in 2026, up from 120,000, with 80,000 for children under 1.2m. You can’t book ahead. Boats hold about 18 people and leave when they’re full, so a solo traveller usually waits less than a group does, and chartering a whole boat at 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 VND makes no sense for one. Allow two and a half hours from Meo Vac including the drive, and get to the ticket office before 9am or after 2pm to miss the queue.

  • Whole-boat charter: 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 VND, negotiated at the ticket desk.

  • Queue in peak weeks (April to May, October to November) and at weekends: 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Bike parking 10,000 VND, car 20,000 VND. A xe ôm down to the dock is about 150,000 VND return if you don’t want to ride it.
• Doing it solo:
  • One seat fills a boat faster than four, so say you’re one person at the desk and ask for the next departure.
  • The charter is a group purchase. Alone you’re on a shared boat with a speaker on it, and the karaoke is real.
  • The café on the southwest bank is the solo move. Get off, let your boat go, sit as long as you want, ride back on any boat.
  • Wear swimwear under your clothes. Some boats stop where you can swim and nobody mentions it beforehand.
• Getting there:
  • Turn off QL4C onto road 193A just past Pa Vi, between Dong Van and Meo Vac. 30 to 40 minutes from Meo Vac.
  • One dock, below the gate of the Nho Que 1 hydropower plant. The old Tà Làng and Xín Cái village wharves closed in 2022.
  • Road works on the access road have meant blasting around 11am to midday and 5pm to 6pm, with waits of up to an hour or more while it’s cleared.
• Don’t bother with the boat if you’re on a three-day loop and behind schedule. The Tu San viewpoint on the 4C costs 30,000 VND and gives you the photograph.

What the Nho Que River Boat Trip Includes

One boat ticket buys a 60 to 90 minute return trip on a motorised longboat from the dock below Ma Pi Leng, up the Nho Que river into Tu San canyon and back.

The boats are long, low, roofed and hold about 18 people. They go when they’re full. It’s roughly a kilometre up to the canyon, where the cliffs close in on both sides, and the boat cuts the engine and sits there for ten or fifteen minutes so everyone can take the photograph they came for.

Then it turns, and on the way back it pulls in at a café on the southwest bank with drinks, instant noodles and a set of viewing platforms above the water.

The bit nobody tells you about that café is that you don’t have to leave with the boat you came on. You can stay as long as you want and get on any boat heading back. Most groups don’t, because their driver is waiting at the top.

Cliffs here run 700 to 800 metres above the water and the canyon itself is about 1.7km long, which is the claim to being the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia. It’s the one thing on the loop that looks bigger from underneath than it does from the pass.

Nho Que River Boat Ride Price in 2027

A Nho Que river boat ticket is 150,000 VND per adult, which the hydro company made an all-in price on 13 April 2026, up from 120,000 and now including the shuttle and insurance. You’ll see both numbers written down.

Bring cash. There’s no card machine anywhere down there and the nearest ATM is in Meo Vac, so I draw the money in Dong Van the night before along with the cash for dinner.

The ticket desk at the visitor centre is where you pay, and a small electric buggy runs you from there down to the dam, then it’s a 200m walk to the boats. Drinks and noodles at the café are extra and cheap.

The charter price is the one that gets misread. It isn’t a private tour, it’s the same boat with nobody else in it, and at 1,200,000 VND upwards it only makes sense at eight or more people.

Doing the Nho Que River Boat Trip Solo

One person is the easiest number to move on this river, and the queue is why.

Nothing here is bookable in advance, and the boats sit at the dock until the seats are gone. If you turn up as a pair or a four you wait for the boat to fill around you. Turn up alone and you’re the seat that completes somebody else’s boat, so say at the desk that you’re one person and ask which boat is nearly full.

In April, May, October and November, and on any weekend when Hanoi is up here, that can be the difference between leaving now and standing about for forty minutes.

What you give up alone is quiet. Every shared boat has a speaker on it and karaoke is a normal part of the trip, and there’s no version of this where one ticket buys silence.

Which brings me back to the café. I get off there, let my boat go, buy a sugarcane juice and sit on the platforms for half an hour with the canyon in front of me and the boats going past below, then take whichever one turns up.

That half hour is the part of the day I’d actually come back for, and it’s free, and it only works if nobody is waiting on you.

If you’re travelling alone and nervous about the water, the boats carry life jackets and the crews hand them out without being asked. The river through the canyon is a reservoir now, so it’s flat.

Wear Your Swimwear Under Your Clothes

Some boats stop at a spot where people swim, and you’ll find out about it when the engine cuts.

There’s no schedule to it. It depends on your boatman, the season and the water, and the people who miss out are the ones who came in jeans. So put swimwear on before you leave Meo Vac and carry a small towel in your daypack, which weighs nothing and covers you either way.

The water is cool and green, and after heavy rain it turns brown and I’d leave it alone.

Nho Que River Boat Dock: There’s Only One Now

There’s now one main boat operation for the Nho Que River, below the Nho Que 1 hydropower plant. Older guides may still mention the former Tà Làng and Xín Cái docks, but that information is outdated.

On Google Maps, search for Bến thuyền hẻm Tu Sản or Nho Que Hydroelectric Power Plant 1, then follow the signs to the ticket area. From there, a shuttle takes you down towards the dock.

The current ticket is 150,000 VND per adult and includes the shuttle, insurance and tax.

Operations can occasionally change or pause, so if the river is the reason you’re adding a day, ask at your homestay in Dong Van or Meo Vac the night before.

How to Get to the Nho Que River From Meo Vac or Dong Van

From Meo Vac it’s 30 to 40 minutes. From Dong Van it’s the Ma Pi Leng pass first, then the same turn, so call it an hour and a quarter.

You take QL4C between the two towns, and just past the Hmong village at Pa Vi you turn onto road 193A, which drops down towards the river. That road is narrow, potholed in places and used by trucks coming up from the hydro plant, so it’s slower than the distance suggests and it’s the one section of this detour I’d be careful on.

Road works have been going on down there for a while, with blasting in two windows, roughly 11am to midday and again around 5pm, and the road stays shut while the crew clears it. An hour is normal. Three hours has happened. Neither of those windows is a good time to be arriving, which is a second reason to be there in the morning.

Two and a half hours from Meo Vac and back is a realistic budget for the whole thing: forty minutes down, forty minutes of queue and boat, half an hour at the café, forty minutes back.

Best Time of Day and Year for the Nho Que Boat Trip

Before 9am or after 2pm, and if you can choose your month, October to December.

The ticket office runs 7am to 6:30pm, and the rule I’d apply is to be on the water by four at the latest, because you’ve still got the pass to ride afterwards and nobody should be on that road in the dark.

Mornings are calmer water and better light into the canyon, which is when I go. Late afternoon is emptier and warmer, and the people who live down there will tell you the canyon is at its best then. They’re probably right, and I’ve never organised myself well enough to test it.

Peak weeks are April and May and again October and November, when the queue at the dock runs 30 to 60 minutes. Weekends are worse than weekdays because Vietnamese visitors come up from Hanoi.

In the wet season from May to August the river silts up brown after heavy rain and the boat is the one thing on the loop that still works in bad weather, since fog on the pass ruins the views up top while the canyon walls stay visible from the water. Which month to come overall is in the best time to visit Ha Giang.

The Canyon Has Changed Since the Dam Was Finished

Water levels in Tu San canyon are higher now, and the cliffs look shorter than they do in photographs taken before 2024.

That’s what the hydro dam downstream did. The gorge is still enormous and the colour is still that flat jade green, and the boat still gets you a view you can’t get from the road. But if you’ve saved a photo from four years ago and you’re expecting to match it, you won’t, and I’d sooner you heard that here than worked it out at the dock.

Is the Nho Que River Boat Ride Worth It, or Is the Viewpoint Enough?

The boat is worth it if you have two and a half spare hours. If you don’t, the viewpoint gives you the photograph for 30,000 VND.

The Tu San canyon viewpoint sits right on the 4C between Dong Van and Meo Vac, and it looks straight down into the gorge. It’s on a blind bend, so park properly and cross once.

From above you get the scale, the river as a green thread, the whole Ma Pi Leng shape of it. From the boat you get the walls, the sound, the swim and the café, and none of the scale.

Different things, and the reason I’d take the boat anyway is that the loop gives you four days of looking at scenery from the top of something, and this is the only hour you spend at the bottom.

On a three-day tour that’s already behind, take the viewpoint and don’t feel short-changed. On four days I’d do both, viewpoint first.

Can You Kayak on the Nho Que River?

No. Since late 2023 the organised boats are the only craft allowed on this stretch, and kayaks, paddleboards and private boats aren’t permitted.

You’ll still find guides and old blog posts offering kayaking on the Nho Que river, and photos of it exist because it was allowed for a while.

The rules could loosen again, since this is a reservoir with a single operator on it. For 2027, plan on the boat.

If You’re on an Easy Rider Tour, Ask Two Things

The boat isn’t included in the price of most Ha Giang Loop tours, and your group’s timing decides whether you get on one.

Ask when you book whether the Nho Que boat trip is in the itinerary and whether the ticket is extra, because at 150,000 VND per person nobody is absorbing that quietly.

Then ask on the first morning what time the group is due at the dock, and if it’s late morning, say you’d rather do it early. Drivers are flexible about this and the ones who do the road weekly know exactly when it clogs up.

If I were doing it again, I’d leave Meo Vac early, get to the ticket office before the tour groups arrive, and take whichever boat is leaving next.

I’d spend a little longer at the café on the way back rather than rushing straight up to the pass. The boat ride itself isn’t very long, and that extra half hour by the river is one of the easiest parts of the day to slow down.

You don’t need to build the whole day around Nho Que. Give it around two to two and a half hours, then continue towards Ma Pi Leng and Dong Van.

And if the weather is poor or your schedule is already tight, the viewpoint above the canyon is still a good alternative. The two experiences are different enough that there isn’t really a wrong choice, it mostly comes down to how much time you have that day.
