We are travelling to Vietnam next January, flights to & from Hanoi booked.

We are travelling to Vietnam next January, flights to & from Hanoi booked. Our itinerary is as follows. Hanoi – Arrive at 10 am. Plan to spend 3 nights there. So that will give us 2 & bit days. We then were collected from Hanoi to go to Ha Lang Bay for a 1 night, 2 day cruise. We are collected from Ha Lang Bay & taken to Ninh Binh. Arrive late afternoon. Staying 5 nights, we leave on the overnight train so that give us 4 full days/nights, plus the day we travel. Arrive in Hue by train at 10.00. Staying 3 nights, so that give us 2 full days plus the day of arrival. Transfer from Hue to Hoi An arriving late afternoon. Staying 7 nights, before flying home. We have 2 nights/days spare. Would you stay an extra night in any of the locations or would you travel somewhere else? We’ve ruled out going to Sapa because the weathers not great in January or doing a 2 night, 3 day cruise around Ha Lang Bay, other than that we’ve open to ideas. Sorry for the long post, but felt it important to give you an idea of what we are already doing. Any suggestions etc. would be great.

We found Hoi An very crowded and full on, we did the old town, boat and show and stayed on the river for 2 nights, but I felt that was enough. We had 7 nights in Danang and did Hoi An in the middle, it’s easy to get there with a Grab

I know it’s pot luck but we went to Sapa for 2 nights on Jan 20th and got the most glorious day so went to Mt Fansipan and it was such a highlight! The other day was a whiteout but also beautiful. The weather from north to south was perfect at this time.

What about adding Phong Nha in as a stop between Ninh Binh and Hue?

I highly recommend doing 3D2N Halong Bay cruise because you get to explore one of the islands. We rode bicycles in Viet Hai Village and that was the highlight of the cruise. Those who did the 2D1N were literally at sea 24 hours only and there wasn’t much to see or do.

I would also fly to Danang a 1 hr 20 min flight and stay a couple days. Weekend would be best to see the dragon bridge.

I’m visiting Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh binh as well and started doing research in each location. Seems like there are quite a bit to do in Hanoi so i’ll recommend extending the days there .. i’m currently planning on 5 days and am struggling to fit everything in. 3 days will be very packed!

Im really interested in this schedule because we are almost following in exactly in reverse right now! We are currently in the Hue, Danang, Hoi An part. Hue is amazing and we are excited for Hou An as without exection every traveller we have met has said that is their favorite place in Vietnam. Danang on arrival looked like the sort of place we don’t usually pick…high-rises, lots of tourists etc…but day 3 we’re starting to enjoy a few days if relaxation esp as we went over to the riverside and it felt more local. Its easy to do TOO MUCH so tucking some days of relaxation in in Da Nang might be good.

I have just been and did a 1 night cruise and regretted not going 2 . It was the highlight of my trip. But we had beautiful weather so we’re lucky !
