My partner and I are planning a trip from Scotland to Vietnam next March. We have roughly 10 days in Vietnam before we fly onwards to Phuket, Thailand, and we are looking for advice on which region of the country to focus on. We are keen on beaches, value a relaxed atmosphere, and would rather avoid large metropolitan centers. Could anyone offer recommendations on where to spend our time?

Why are you going to Vietnam?
Look at travelfish or go to local library and borrow a guidebook to see what appeals.
There are plenty of varied things to see. Cities do rate highly, particularly Hanoi and Saigon. Also lots of stunning nature.
I wouldn’t bother about beaches as you are heading for Phuket.

Mar is the ideal time to visit all parts of Vietnam. With 10 days as a first timer, you can consider the northern part (with Hanoi, Ninh Binh/Sapa, Halong Bay) & the central part (with Danang/Hoian, Hue) Or the southern part (with Saigon, Mekong Delta).
There are some nice beaches in Vietnam, but it’s not really a “beach” destination.
In other words, it might pale in comparison to what you might experience in Thailand.
It might help to know a bit more of your interests in Vietnam outside of beaches and avoiding big cities to give you some better points that will compliment or contrast.
