Looking at Hanoi hotels and the ones near West Lake are nicer and cheaper for the same money, plus the area looks calmer. Everyone says stay in the Old Quarter though, and I am wondering if I would regret being further out.
How much of a pain is it getting from West Lake to the main sights? Is Grab cheap and fast enough that it does not matter, or does the location really change the trip? We are there for 4 nights in December.

We stayed near West Lake for 5 nights and loved it. Quieter at night, better coffee shops, and the lake walk in the evening is lovely. Grab to the Old Quarter is about 60k and takes 15 minutes, so you are not really far from anything.

That is good to hear. Did you find it annoying going back and forth though? We will probably want dinner in the Old Quarter most nights.

Not really, we just planned around it. Go to the Old Quarter in the late afternoon, have dinner, Grab back. The only annoying part is rush hour, around 5 to 7pm the traffic is slow. Outside that it is easy.
