Before I head out shortly, can anyone confirm if it is currently accessible? I have read conflicting accounts on whether it is open/closed or if making a prior cafe reservation is required for entry!

Why does it matter what the trains are carrying ?
You can’t miss it, just follow the train tracks. Ordinary trains runs as usual. Accesible if you come walking both from north and south.

Getting off the track but someone CLAIMED that the trains that go past are not actually carrying passengers. It is purely bunged on for tourists.
When we went to the Southern end we were met at the entrance by a lady that took us to “her” cafe. We stayed for a while and had a drink but didn’t like the place so we moved to another cafe with a lovely lady and had a great time.
I understand the confusion as O had some also prior to my April trip, but once I got there an saw it it fell into place. They had gridiron gates up at the popular entrances that the shopkeepers then would take down maybe 20 minutes before a train ‘s arrival. I just chose cafes that looked nice as after all, I was there for the experience more so than the drink. I went 3 times. Sat a track level twice and on a cafe balcony once.

Thank you! It transpired we were staying near south train street so walked there. Was really fun and we saw 3 trains in the space of around 40 mins!
We went in April and as usual our map reading sent us to a different area, from the first visit.. There are a ton of cafes that line the tracks. They will move you and your table in time. ..they have it sorted and will direct you to their Cafe. We had a drink watched the train and left..its extremely busy with people..we went for the night train.

Sometimes they have ‘security’ guarding the ‘entrances’. Then you enter with a café owner or a touting “tour guide”.
I’m talking about the original/northern bit. I have no idea what goes on at the southern train street.
